Spheres of Philosophical Inquiry and the Historiography of Medieval Philosophy

Spheres of Philosophical Inquiry and the Historiography of Medieval Philosophy PDF Author: John Inglis
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004247351
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Recent writers in the historiography of philosophy have placed into question the paradigms that structure our historical writing. This volume continues this discussion with particular reference to medieval philosophy. Inglis shows that the modern historiography of medieval philosophy had its origins in certain nineteenth-century German reactions to Kantian idealism. He uncovers the philosophical, political, and theological origins of how we have come to interpret medieval philosophy according to the standard spheres of philosophy. By keeping such historiography in mind and paying attention to the context in which the medieval actually wrote, Inglis raises serious questions concerning the accuracy of the dominant model and proposes an historically sensitive alternative. The genealogy will interest medievalists and intellectual historians, the alternative model will interest historians of medieval philosophy, and theology.

Walter Chatton on Future Contingents

Walter Chatton on Future Contingents PDF Author: Jon Bornholdt
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004338349
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 550

Book Description
In Walter Chatton on Future Contingents, Jon Bornholdt presents the first full-length translation, commentary, and analysis of the various attempts by Chatton (14th century C.E.) to solve the ancient problem of the status and significance of statements about the future. At issue is the danger of so-called logical determinism: if it is true now that a human will perform a given action tomorrow, is that human truly free to perform or refrain from performing that action? Bornholdt shows that Chatton constructed an original (though problematic) formal analysis that enabled him to canvass various approaches to the problem at different stages of his career, at all times showing an unusual sensitivity to the tension between formalist and metaphysical types of solution.
