Excerpt from Occasional Papers of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History, Vol. 2 The rapidly vanishing native fauna should be saved as far as is now possible by securing such collections as are available; and four thousand dollars can be well spent at once in this way. While we have a collector at work on the land shells, we have not in our cabinets more than half of the described marine shells attributed to our waters. We have about half of the described Species of coral, and even a less proportion of the lower marine forms. The Com missioner of Fisheries has informed me that the Commission desire to place in our Museum cotypes of the new species of fish collected by the Albatross expedition last summer, as well as all possible of the general collection made. This generous gift will be of great value in the future study of the Hawaiian fish fauna, which under the wasteful fishing of the Orientals will soon be difficult to find. Our collection of Hawaiian Crustacea is of little importance and Should be made an especial object in our future work. But this report deals more with what we have done and are doing, although all such work is continuous and must be done in reference to future needs. Our Staff has changed its personnel during the year. Mr. Allen M. Walcott, after several years of faithful work, resigned in June to continue his studies in the University of California, and Mr. Leopold Blackman was appointed in his place. Mr. Ralph C. Geer was made assistant to the Director for his great skill in carpentry and general manual work. Mr. C. M. Cooke, Jr., was appointed an assistant as especially interested in studying the distribution and variation of Hawaiian Land Shells, and in this line he has made extensive collections in Nuuanu valley. As the food of the Hawaiians consisted largely of fish, they, like other Polynesians, were expert fishermen. Not only were their fishing implements well developed, but their working knowledge of the habits of the local fishes was remarkably good. It may seem surprising, therefore, that a people so largely depend ent on fish food should resort to a method which with the mature fish destroyed also the immature. But this quick and cer tain means of taking fish being carried on during only part of the year, the damage to the fishing industry was probably not so great as might be expected. Excerpt from Occasional Papers of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History, Vol. 8: Tongan Astronomy and Calendar From the exceedingly fragmentary and obscure accounts it appears that the Tongans possess but the vaguest notions of the heavens and of the relations of the sky to stars and sun and moon. They evidently thought of a number of skies, one above the other. One informant expressed the opinion that the number of skies was as great as one hundred. He also suggested a connection between the skies and the great burial vaults at Mua and elsewhere, and it is worthy of note that sky and vault are called by the same name, Iangi. The stars are said to be in the highest sky. So far as I have been able to discover, the study of astronomy was treated by the Tongans as a branch of navigation. Certain it is that these bold and skilful mariners were keen observers of the heavens and that no small part of the equipment of the old sea captains was the ability, based rather on experience and judgment than on rules, to determine when to shift from one star or con stellation and to set the course by another group.
