The Confucian World Observed
Author: Weiming Tu
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 9780824814519
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 164
Book Description
A workshop sponsored by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1989 brought together more than two dozen scholars in the humanities and social sciences to explore Confucian ethics as a common intellectual discourse in East Asia. The participants included specialists on the societies of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore as well as scholars who specialize in comparative studies. In nine intensive sessions, they probed the ways in which the Confucian ethic has shaped perceptions of selfhood, dynamics of familial relations, gender construction, social organization, political authority, popular beliefs, and economic culture in East Asia. This book is a distillation of the essence of their multidisciplinary and cross-cultural examination of these issues. It seeks especially to illuminate claims that Confucian ethics have provided the necessary background and a powerful motivation in the rise of industrial East Asia, the most dynamic region of sustained economic growth and political development since World War II.

Heavy Metals in the Aquatic Environment
Author: P. A. Krenkel
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483144437
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 363
Book Description
Heavy Metals in the Aquatic Environment contains the proceedings of an international conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in December 1973. This conference is co-sponsored by the International Association on Water Pollution Research, the Sport Fishing Institute, the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association, and Vanderbilt University's Department of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. Contributors focus on the hazards posed by heavy metals present in the aquatic environment and how to control them. This text consists of 45 chapters divided into eight sections. This book assesses the environmental impact of heavy metals found in the aquatic environment; the economic impact of removing them from waste effluents; and the costs vs. benefits attained by their removal. The social costs are also evaluated. After an introduction to dose-response relationships resulting from human exposure to methylmercury compounds, the discussion turns to the toxicity of cadmium in relation to itai-itai disease; the effects of heavy metals on fish and aquatic organisms; and the analytical methods used for measuring concentrations of methylmercury and other heavy metals. The next sections explore the transport, distribution, and removal of heavy metals, along with regulations, standards, surveillance, and monitoring aimed at addressing the problem. This book will be of interest to planners and policymakers involved in water pollution control.

Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134800703
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
Systems for the appraisal of teachers have been in place since 1992, bringing with them considerable controversy. How effective are they? What does this mean for the classroom teacher? This major new study, led by Ted Wragg, uses as its basis information gathered from all 109 Local Education authorities, 658 primary and secondary teachers and 479 appraisers. Teacher appraisal is examined from the perspectives of all those concerned and at all levels. The main focus of the study is on teacher competence in the classroom, which lies at the heart of school effectiveness and improving pupils' achievement. Through the use of a variety of methods including intensive case studies, the book provides a unique insight into the quality of classroom practice and teacher appraisal today, what it means for those involved and how to use this knowledge to move on from this point.

Mental Telepathy and Announcing Dreams
Author: Milton Brener
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1543449751
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Does telepathy really exist? Milton Brener offers overwhelming proof that it does, with humans often communicating, sometimes over distances of thousands of miles, with no other means of contact possible. Intriguingly, he goes further. The announcing dream mentioned in the title has been documented worldwide. The dreamer is most often the mother of an unborn child, though it is at other times another family member. The child in utero often conveys that it is a deceased member of the family who claims to be returning. In many such cases, the baby is born with memories of the prior life, and investigations have often proved such memories to be accurate. Is this all imagination? Is there a scientific basis for any of it? Brener claims and convincingly shows that an aspect of quantum physics, known as entanglement, could well be the scientific basis for it.
