Book Description
Excerpt from Observations on the Epidemic Now Prevailing in the City of New-York: Called the Asiatic or Spasmodic Cholera; With Advice to the Planters of the South, for the Medical Treatment of Their Slaves The following pages do not strictly comprehend a treatise on the spasmodic cholera. They merely contain observations elicited from time to time by what has been done during its prevalence in this country. They are intended to point out the errors which, in the writer's opinion, have occurred in the management and treatment of the disease; and, if possible, to lead to a correction of those errors. In order to render this pamphlet more useful and instructive to the reader, it may not be out of place here to point out the premonitory and fixed symptoms of the malady; a good description of which, in accordance with the writer's own judgment and observation, is contained in the following extract from a report of a committee appointed by the medical society of this city, signed by John Stearns, M.D. chairman. "The best writers on cholera asphyxia, generally agree that it is invariably preceded by the following symptoms: "The patient complains of lassitude and a partial uneasiness in the region of the stomach, accompanied with some slight evacuations from the bowels, insufficient however to excite his attention or alarm.
