Book Description
Excerpt from Observations on the Embryology of Insects and Arachnids Adam Todd Bruce was born March 6th, 1860; he graduated at the University of New Jersey in 1881; he obtained the degree of Ph. D., at the Johns Hopkins University in June, 1886; he was appointed an Instructor in the Johns Hopkins University in September, 1886, and his death took place in March, 1887. During the three years of my acquaintance with Dr. Bruce, the rapid development of his strong character was a constant pleasure to me, but while each day added strength to my belief that a most useful and distinguished career lay before him as a scientific investigator, I sorrow for the loss of an affectionate friend, rather than the death of a bright and promising pupil and student of nature. Our relation was not that of instructor and pupil, but an intimate personal friendship; to me he had brought his pleasures and successes, and his troubles and perplexities, and when I received, by the first mail which reached me at the Bahama Islands, the sad news of his death, I keenly felt the isolation which added intensity to the loss, and cut me off from a share in the expression of affection for his memory by his friends in Baltimore. As I was not able to attend the meeting of his friends in Baltimore, when the news of his death was received, it is a great pleasure to have this opportunity to speak of the value of his scientific researches, and of the great loss which science has sustained by his untimely death, just as he was beginning to apply his skill and his thorough training in technical methods to the solution of new problems.
