Book Description
The United States is blessed with thousands of institutions of post secondary education. Integrity is alive at all levels. Learning takes place. American higher education is a stupendous achievement with a proud tradition. No area in the world is likely to claim better schools and a better record. Hundreds of small institutions with less than 1000 students, some public, some private, independent, some denominational, some comprehensive, others program selective, represent and live the spirit of a community of learning. But it is also true that the system of American higher education, just as American democracy, is confronted with challenges and threats. As the the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education has recently, in August 2022, observed, “ The system was never completely right-side up”. He talked of a “post-secondary purgatory”, of a ranking system that is “a joke”, and called for a “cultural change in higher education, NOW”. These challenges and threats need to be addressed now, while it is still, hopefully, time to avert potentially catastrophic consequences. Just as democratic institutions are likely to be misused and need constant critical vigilance, so educational institutions need , active, constant attention and engaged maintenance. The experiences described in these chapters, while accurate, do not reflect comprehensively the “state of post-secondary American education”. But glaring defects and negative tendencies do exist and continue at all levels and to a degree that demands informed awareness and action. The quantitative leap in the student population after 1945 accelerated positive and negative developments. Opportunity of education is available, but hardly equal opportunity. Higher education seems to have become unduly influenced by interests and considerations destructive of quality education. Changes need to be considered and consensually implemented now in order to minimize intended and unintended negative consequences.

Contemporary Perspectives on Natural Law
Author: Dr Ana Marta González
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
ISBN: 1409485668
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
Resorting to natural law is one way of conveying the philosophical conviction that moral norms are not merely conventional rules. Accordingly, the notion of natural law has a clear metaphysical dimension, since it involves the recognition that human beings do not conceive themselves as sheer products of society and history. And yet, if natural law is to be considered the fundamental law of practical reason, it must show also some intrinsic relationship to history and positive law. The essays in this book examine this tension between the metaphysical and the practical and how the philosophical elaboration of natural law presents this notion as a "limiting-concept", between metaphysics and ethics, between the mutable and the immutable; between is and ought, and, in connection with the latter, even the tension between politics and eschatology as a double horizon of ethics. This book, contributed to by scholars from Europe and America, is a major contribution to the renewed interest in natural law. It provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of natural law, both from a historical and a systematic point of view. It ranges from the mediaeval synthesis of Aquinas through the early modern elaborations of natural law, up to current discussions on the very possibility and practical relevance of natural law theory for the contemporary mind.

Natural Law Theory
Author: Tom Angier
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108586392
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 118
Book Description
In Section 1, I outline the history of natural law theory, covering Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and Aquinas. In Section 2, I explore two alternative traditions of natural law, and explain why these constitute rivals to the Aristotelian tradition. In Section 3, I go on to elaborate a via negativa along which natural law norms can be discovered. On this basis, I unpack what I call three 'experiments in being', each of which illustrates the cogency of this method. In Section 4, I investigate and rebut two seminal challenges to natural law methodology, namely, the fact/value distinction in metaethics and Darwinian evolutionary biology. In Section 5, I then outline and criticise the 'new' natural law theory, which is an attempt to revise natural law thought in light of the two challenges above. I conclude, in Section 6, with a summary and some reflections on the prospects for natural law theory.
