A pesar de que es un problema frecuente, muchas veces pasa inadvertido por el personal médico y paramédico de la institución, en virtud de que habitualmente no se piensa en este diagnóstico o se considera una enfermedad secundaria de poco interés. Si bien la desnutrición afecta la evolución de la enfermedad, disminuye la fuerza muscular y el estado inmunitario del huésped, y aumenta las complicaciones infecciosas y posoperatorias, así como los gastos de salud y la estancia hospitalaria. Por ello se insiste en que es subestimada por el personal de salud.
