Book Description
Excerpt from Nursing the Insane A large number of the population of every State hospital is composed of chronic and presumably incurable cases, but many are susceptible of marked mental improvement, and some of recovery. These patients make up a large community of peculiar and trying persons. To deal with them wisely and kindly requires exceptional qualities of mind and character. The training of nurses and attendants for these patients must cover a much wider field than is comprised in the course of the ordinary trained nurse. The nurse for the insane must be prepared to care for the ordinary medical and surgical diseases of her patients, in addition to their mental ailments; for insanity does not exempt them from the other ills that flesh is heir to. She must safeguard them from injuring themselves or others, must possess many of the qualities that make a good teacher, since a part of her duty is to help correct faults in early train ing and development, and to encourage and train to correct and useful habits and proper behavior; she has also to employ and entertain her patients, under the direction of the medical officers; and to her is intrusted that almost constant association and companionship which, if sympathetic and judicious, is one of the most potent means of restoring her charges to mental health. Book Description
Excerpt from Nursing and Care of the Nervous and the Insane IN the present edition of this work the author, with the assistance of Dr. Yawger, has endeavored to bring it more nearly up to date. Such a book cannot be regarded as giving all the information necessary to be known by nurses concerning patients suffering from nervous and mental maladies. Useful anatomical and physiological data are to be found in the volumes upon anatomy prepared for nurses and in more general treatises. The book is chiefly intended to recall facts regarding nursing obtained by experience. Attention has been particularly directed to some new facts regard ing epilepsy, fibrositis and insanity. New illustrations of the charts and the apparatus most useful in electrical practice have been added. The unusually fine motor point plates from Dr. Toby Cohn's excellent work on Electro-diagnosis and Electro-therapeutics have been obtained through the courtesy of the author and his publishers. Instruction regarding hydrotherapy, not included in previous editions, has been incorpo rated. The author trusts that the book in its revised form will be found more useful than previous editions. How to Care for the Insane

How to Care for the Insane PDF Author: William D. Granger
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331241683
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
Excerpt from How to Care for the Insane: A Manual for Nurses At the time of starting a training school, in 1883, the author was unaware that like work was commencing at the McLean Asylum, Somerville, Mass., by Dr. Campbell Clark and others in Scotland, and in New South Wales. Each was independent, and each worked out the problem independently. Thus, far separated efforts showed the time had come when attendants must be evolved into trained nurses. The most gratifying feature has been the unanimous approval by American superintendents and the establishment of training schools in almost every asylum in the land, often under the most difficult conditions and at a great sacrifice of the precious time and strength of the medical staff. The increasing number of these schools and pupils demands a second edition of this little manual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Nursing Mental Diseases The subject matter of these classes has been derived from many lectures clinics and staff meetings, and the nursing procedures suggested are those simple measures which a thoughtful nurse can make use of to relieve a patient who is depressed, to quiet a restless and excited one, to arouse one who is indifferent, to manage one who is resistive and quarrelsome, the timely application of which can do much to prevent a more serious condition and consequences. Acknowledgment is gratefully made to many writers and physicians from whose works and teachings these classes have been made up, and especially to George H. Kirby, M.D., for many suggestions and for the criticism of this manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Monthly Nursing (Classic Reprint)

Monthly Nursing (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: A. Worcester

ISBN: 9781332270583
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Excerpt from Monthly Nursing Nursing is a new profession, and marks a glorious advance in civilization. Like the profession it supplements, it naturally divides into specialties, chief among which will always be that of monthly nursing. In other sicknesses, members of the family can often nurse each other. In time of travail even the savage depends upon the help of other women; and in no other branch of improved nursing is there promise of greater blessing to the human race. To the young doctor, fresh from his study of the science, the art of Midwifery is intelligible. Even if his memory fails him, his text-books and note-books are at hand to tell him the reason of every step. The student nurse, on the other hand, whether in maternity wards or in private service, lacks this great advantage.
