Nè solo dell' essenza della luce molti sembrano oggi essere chiari, ma più ancora dell' essenza della vita e dell'anima, e levandosi più alto s' affidano d' abbracciare in una veduta d' insieme tutta la realtà. Senonchè a voli siffatti gli scienziati s' affidano a loro rischio e pe ricolo, e la scienza non ha nè merito dei loro trionfi, nè colpa delle loro cadute, riuscite talvolta tanto più disastrose quanto più alta fu la salita. Non cade lo scienziato, le cui scoperte ed osser vazioni nuove sopravvivono alla ruina delle sue speculazioni, si il filosofo, che non fece esatto calcolo delle sue forze e degli ostacoli che avrebbe incontrati per via. Un esempio illustre di uno scien ziato filosofo, che dalle ricerche sul batibio e sui protisti arriva al monismo quale vincolo fra religione e scienza è Ernesto Haeckel Per l' eminente posto che egli occupa fra i naturalisti e i continua tori del Darwin, è cosi noto anche al gran pubblico, che molti impersonano in lui la scienza, e ferendo lui credono di colpire la scienza stessa. Non v'e piu chi sostenga le idee, che la societa sia il portato di un contratto volontario, pel quale l'uomo abdichi la sua liberta; ne che gli uomini nascano tutti uguali di attitudini e di facolta, e che la sola differenza di educazione li diversifichi tra loro: ne infine che lo Stato abbia il potere colle sue istituzioni di foggiare un popolo, e colle leggi di Licurgo, di Solone e di Numa rifare degli Spartani, degli Ateniesi e de'romani. Tutte queste idee, caldeggiate nel secolo scorso, spe cialmente da' filosofi francesi, sono state dallo studio accurato della fisiologia, della geografia, della storia, della filosofia, chiarite in sussistenti. Taluni moderni naturalisti si sono sforzati di provare che persino in alcune specie di animali e connaturata la societa, e che vi si scorgono embrioni di funzioni potestative e coercitive, ossia l'embrione di uno Stato. Ma checche sia di cio, lo studio dei popoli, cominciando dai piu selvaggi, fornisce le prove che l'uomo nasce nella societa e per la societa, che ivi attinge la educazione nel piu lato senso di questa parola, e che fuori di essa non sarebbe uomo, ma bruto. Quanto alla originaria uguaglianza, anch'essa e smentita dal fatto, poiche ci stanno dinanzi ogni giorno esempi della grande varieta negl'ingegni, nelle disposizioni, nelle voca zioni, repugnanti persino ad ogni sforzo di educazione. E non e l'uguaglianza che e da natura, ma piuttosto la diversita e la ge rarchia cosi nell'uomo, come in tutti gli esseri.
