Book Description
A novel, light gauge steel stud-thin shell precast concrete panel system was developed to serve as a vertical wall panel element to resist vertical and out-of-plane horizontal loads. The behavior and capacity of this system to sustain in-plane lateral loads arising from wind and earthquake actions are currently not understood. The focus of this research is to assess the performance of such a system when subjected to lateral loading. Two-dimensional monotonic and reverse cyclic nonlinear finite element analyses of the Thin Shell Precast (TSP) panel was conducted using Program VecTor2. The analyses evaluated the effect of various components of the system including the type and size of the internal reinforcing bars and the influence of the exterior light-gauge steel framing. The modelling also shed light on the effect of reinforcement bonding and the difference in response between squat and slender wall systems. Through the nonlinear modelling, lateral load-displacement (drift) responses were generated for monotonic and reverse cyclic motions, in addition to quantifying the yield and ultimate loads and corresponding displacements (drifts). Preliminary analyses were used to modify the design of the Thin Shell Panel to achieve an improved lateral response.

Hybrid Composite Precast Systems

Hybrid Composite Precast Systems PDF Author: Won-Kee Hong
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 0081027419
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
Hybrid Composite Precast Systems: Numerical Investigation to Construction focuses on the design and construction of novel composite precast frame systems that permit almost effortless erection and structural efficiency. The precast frame systems discussed in the book are similar to that of steel frames, but offer similar savings to concrete frames. The design of connections and detailed analysis of their structural behavior is discussed in detail. Fundamentals with regards to the post yield behavior of concrete and metal are also presented to illustrate how these two different materials are integrated together to remove individual material drawbacks. Readers are given a broad introduction to existing technologies that are then combined with a description of the construction methods the author proposes. This book will help the end users become familiar with the existing types of structural forms, not just the "Lego" type frame system that the author proposes. - Discusses how traditional construction methods can be replaced by innovative hybrid composite precast frame systems that provide rapid and effortless erection capabilities and structural efficiency - Contains several design examples using non-linear finite element analysis completed with Abaqus based-software - Contains new milestone inventions in construction that offer structural engineering solutions using a novel, modularized hybrid frame system - Provides information on structural testing that verifies the accuracy of the structural design

Recent Advances in the Design of Structures with Passive Energy Dissipation Systems

Recent Advances in the Design of Structures with Passive Energy Dissipation Systems PDF Author: Giuseppe Ricciardi
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039360604
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
Passive vibration control plays a crucial role in structural engineering. Common solutions include seismic isolation and damping systems with various kinds of devices, such as viscous, viscoelastic, hysteretic, and friction dampers. These strategies have been widely utilized in engineering practice, and their efficacy has been demonstrated in mitigating damage and preventing the collapse of buildings, bridges, and industrial facilities. However, there is a need for more sophisticated analytical and numerical tools to design structures equipped with optimally configured devices. On the other hand, the family of devices and dissipative elements used for structural protection keeps evolving, because of growing performance demands and new progress achieved in materials science and mechanical engineering. This Special Issue collects 13 contributions related to the development and application of passive vibration control strategies for structures, covering both traditional and innovative devices. In particular, the contributions concern experimental and theoretical investigations of high-efficiency dampers and isolation bearings; optimization of conventional and innovative energy dissipation devices; performance-based and probability-based design of damped structures; application of nonlinear dynamics, random vibration theory, and modern control theory to the design of structures with passive energy dissipation systems; and critical discussion of implemented isolation/damping technologies in significant or emblematic engineering projects.

Book Description
In this volume, top seismic experts and researchers from Europe and around the world, including the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) in the USA, present the most recent outcome of their work in experimental testing, as well as the results of the transnational access activities of external researchers who have used Europe's seven largest and most advanced seismic testing facilities in the framework of the Seismic Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies (SERIES) Project financed by the European Commission in its 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013). This includes EU’s largest reaction wall facility, EU's four largest shaking table laboratories and its two major centrifuges. The work presented includes state-of-the-art research towards the seismic design, assessment and retrofitting of structures, as well as the development of innovative research toward new fundamental technologies and techniques promoting efficient and joint use of the research infrastructures. The contents of this volume demonstrate the fruits of the effort of the European Commission in supporting research in earthquake engineering.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade H. Shafer

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Engaging the Public to Fight the Consequences of Terrorism and Disasters PDF Author: I. Apostol
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1614994935
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
Governments must work tirelessly to update their preparedness for dealing with natural and man-made disasters, as well as taking account of the increasingly present threat of terrorism. Efficient international cooperation is key to achieving safety and internationalizing security policy. This book presents the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) Engaging the Public to Fight the Consequences of Terrorism and Disasters, held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in June 2014. The purpose of the workshop was to analyze accumulated European theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the field of disaster prevention and the involvement of the public in preventing and fighting the consequences of terrorism, as well as natural and man-made disasters. There was a particular focus on the perspective of the region, especially with a view to meeting European Union standards and setting uniform and independent standards for hazard and risk assessment methods. The protection of economically critical infrastructure, such as dams, pipelines and transport and storage facilities, was addressed as were the issues of managing water and non-renewable resources, the disposal of dangerous chemicals and radioactive waste, and defensible methods of transport for fuel supplies and key personnel. Contributions reflected the extensive experience of the participating NATO and partner countries, including Armenia, Austria, Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Moldova, the Netherlands, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine as well as international organizations such as UNECE and NATO.
