Phase separation has become a fascinating subject in the discussion of cuprate superconductors. All these materials have layered structures containing CU02 planes as the most important building blocks. They are coupled only weakly so that the electronic properties show a nearly two-dimensional behaviour. Due to correlations the undoped compounds are insulators of the Mott Hubbard type exhibiting long-range antiferromagnetic order. Upon doping a rich scenario of physical phenomena appears: Even at low hole concentra tions the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature is reduced drastically and spin-glass behaviour as well as a hopping type conductivity can be observed. Further doping leads to metallic-like conductivity and below Tc to super conductivity. In this doping regime antiferromagnetic fluctuations are still observed. At very high charge carrier densities superconductivity is lost and the systems show pure metallic conduction without ,magnetic correlations. One of the most interesting phenomena in high-T c research is the interplay between magnetism and conductivity or superconductivity. Especially the behaviour of charge carriers in the antiferromagnetic background raises a number of open questions. Two scenarios become possible: the carriers tend to delocalize over the whole crystal forming a homogeneous state with band-like structure or they separate into hole-rich (conducting, superconducting) and hole-poor (insulating, antiferromagnetic) phases leading to an inhomogeneous structure.

Strongly correlated electron systems exhibit a panoply of fascinating phases, such as antiferromagnetism, charge order, and unconventional superconductivity, that compete or cooperate with one another. Yet the intertwined degrees of freedom that create this complexity also obscure the underlying mechanisms, so that numerous experimental and theoretical studies have been brought to bear on these materials. This thesis provides a window on the field from the perspective of phenomenological and microscopic studies of the cuprates and nickelates. The first part presents a phenomenological model of strongly coupled orders that explains recent time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments on the nickelates. The new experimental technique enables us to disentangle degrees of freedom that are intertwined in thermal equilibrium, motivating a need for theoretical developments. Our time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory facilitates an understanding of how coupled orders behave when driven out of equilibrium. The second part of the thesis explores numerical simulations of microscopic models to answer open questions in the cuprates. A comparison of spin and charge susceptibilities computed in the single-band Hubbard model via determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) to those calculated using the random phase approximation (RPA) elucidates how electronic correlations evolve throughout the phase diagram. Combined DQMC and exact diagonalization (ED) studies of the three-orbital Hubbard model systematically evaluate broken-symmetry states that have been proposed to explain the pseudogap regime. Thus the use of complementary techniques, both analytical and computational, sheds light on different ordered phases and excitations in strongly correlated systems and points the way to further studies.

This thesis makes significant advances towards an understanding of superconductivity in the cuprate family of unconventional, high-temperature superconductors. Even though the high-temperature superconductors were discovered over 35 years ago, there is not yet a general consensus on an acceptable theory of superconductivity in these materials. One of the early proposals suggested that collective magnetic excitations of the conduction electrons could lead them to form pairs, which in turn condense to form the superconducting state at a critical temperature Tc. Quantitative calculations of Tc using experimental data were, however, not available to verify the applicability of this magnetic mechanism. In this thesis, the author constructed an angle-resolved photoemission apparatus that could provide sufficiently accurate data of the electronic excitation spectra of samples in the normal state, data which was furthermore unusually devoid of any surface contamination. The author also applied the Bethe-Salpeter method to his uncommonly pristine and precise normal state data, and was able to predict the approximate superconducting transition temperatures of different samples. This rare combination of experiment with sophisticated theoretical calculations leads to the conclusion that antiferromagnetic correlations are a viable candidate for the pairing interaction in the cuprate superconductors.
