Book Description
This study combines the techniques of computational fluid dynamics and experimentation. An unsteady laminar boundary layer code was shown to be more efficient when modified to solve the momentum and energy equations using Thomas' algorithm instead of optimized successive over relaxation (SOR). A steady eddy viscosity turbulence model was then added to the code: two models for the inner region, Van Driest and Chapman, and two models for the outer region, a mixing length and Clauser were used. The computer code was verified against theoretical and experimental data from the literature. The code shows excellent results for laminar flow and each of the models showed very good agreement with turbulent experimental data. The experimental study was conducted in a Mach 6 blowdown wind tunnel. Oil flow, sublimation, liquid crystals, and thin film gages were used to examine the flow structure and heat transfer on a flat plate. The heat transfer rates from these gages were lower than from the liquid crystals. The viscid inviscid interaction flow region of flow past a blunt fin mounted on the flat plate was examined using the same flow visualization methods and possible flow interaction models are presented. Striation heating appeared when the fin incidence was 40 deg. and the sweep was 60 or 75 deg. The numerical and experimental techniques of this study were then merged. The heat transfer results from the flat plate experiment were compared with results from the computer code and were found to be in good agreement. (Thesis) (Author).

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade H. Shafer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461573912
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers

Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers PDF Author: Tuncer Cebeci
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323151051
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 423

Book Description
Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers focuses on turbulent flows meeting the requirements for the boundary-layer or thin-shear-layer approximations. Its approach is devising relatively fundamental, and often subtle, empirical engineering correlations, which are then introduced into various forms of describing equations for final solution. After introducing the topic on turbulence, the book examines the conservation equations for compressible turbulent flows, boundary-layer equations, and general behavior of turbulent boundary layers. The latter chapters describe the CS method for calculating two-dimensional and axisymmetric laminar and turbulent boundary layers. This book will be useful to readers who have advanced knowledge in fluid mechanics, especially to engineers who study the important problems of design.

Numerical Solution of the Equations for Compressible Laminar, Transitional, and Turbulent Boundary Layers and Comparisons with Experimental Data

Numerical Solution of the Equations for Compressible Laminar, Transitional, and Turbulent Boundary Layers and Comparisons with Experimental Data PDF Author: Julius E. Harris

Category : Aerodynamics, Hypersonic
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.
