Book Description
This paper presents an analysis of a LiNbO3 electro-optic modulator using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) technique, and also a new and efficient multiresolution time-domain technique for fast and accurate modeling of photonic devices. The electromagnetic fields computed by FDTD are coupled to standard electro-optic relations that characterize electro-optic interactions. This novel approach to LiNbO3 electro-optic modulators using a coupled FDTD technique allows for previously unattainable investigations into device operating bandwidth and data transmission speed. On the other hand, the proposed multiresolution approach presented in this paper solves Maxwell's Equations on nonuniform self-adaptive grids, obtained by applying wavelet transforms followed by hard thresholding. The developed technique is employed to simulate a coplanar waveguide CPW, which represents an electro-optic modulator. Different numerical examples are presented showing more than 75% CPU-time reduction, while maintaining the same degree of accuracy of standard FDTD techniques.

Semiconductor Optical Modulators

Semiconductor Optical Modulators PDF Author: Koichi Wakita
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461560713
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
The introduction of GaAs/ AIGaAs double heterostructure lasers has opened the door to a new age in the application of compound semiconductor materials to microwave and optical technologies. A variety and combination of semiconductor materials have been investigated and applied to present commercial uses with these devices operating at wide frequencies and wavelengths. Semiconductor modulators are typical examples of this technical evolutions and hsve been developed for commercial use. Although these have a long history to date, we are not aware of any book that details this evolution. Consequently, we have written a book to provide a comprehensive account of semiconductor modulators with emphasis on historical details and experimantal reports. The objective is to provide an up-to-date understanding of semiconductor modulators. Particular attention has been paid to multiple quantum well (MQW) modulators operating at long wavelengths, taking into account the low losses and dispersion in silica fibers occuring at around 1.3 and 1.55 mm. At the present time, MQW structures have been investigated but these have not been sufficiently developed to provide characteristic features which would be instructive enough for readers. One problem is the almost daily publication of papers on semiconductor modulators. Not only do these papers provide additional data, but they often modify the interpretations of particular concepts. Almost all chapters refer to the large number of published papers that can be consulted for future study.

A 2-D Numerical Simulation and Analysis of a Simple Band Model for the Priz Spatial Light Modulator

A 2-D Numerical Simulation and Analysis of a Simple Band Model for the Priz Spatial Light Modulator PDF Author: Gary D. Barmore
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781423573661
Category : Light modulators
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
This dissertation discusses the development of and analyzes the first complete, 2-D numerical simulation of the PRIZ. The simulation is based upon a simple band model of the PRIZ: a single donor, a single trap, and free electron carriers. Modeled mechanisms include photogeneration, energy level transitions, injection, drift currents, diffusion currents, photorefraction and diffraction. The model goes beyond the previous charge and field dynamics of 1-D numerical models to include optical effects, and it eliminates the oversimplifications and assumptions used in earlier mathematical models with closed solutions. Sensitivity analyses and selected simulations provide a better understanding of the dynamic imaging phenomena. The device output depends on the relative dominance or strength of the fields in the positive or negative space charge region. Transverse drift is as important as charge mirror imaging and injection current in determining peak output and self-erasure. The simulations show a broad range of unreported behavior both before and after writ-beam turnoff, including sharp transients; reintensification with and without phase reversals; and even strong intensification after a turnoff. Finally, the 2-D model is shown to be a reasonable representation of the PRIZ by comparing simulated output with experimental data from the literature.

Systems Engineering and Analysis of Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems

Systems Engineering and Analysis of Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems PDF Author: William Wolfgang Arrasmith
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1466579935
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 828

Book Description
Electro-optical and infrared systems are fundamental in the military, medical, commercial, industrial, and private sectors. Systems Engineering and Analysis of Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems integrates solid fundamental systems engineering principles, methods, and techniques with the technical focus of contemporary electro-optical and infrared optics, imaging, and detection methodologies and systems. The book provides a running case study throughout that illustrates concepts and applies topics learned. It explores the benefits of a solid systems engineering-oriented approach focused on electro-optical and infrared systems. This book covers fundamental systems engineering principles as applied to optical systems, demonstrating how modern-day systems engineering methods, tools, and techniques can help you to optimally develop, support, and dispose of complex, optical systems. It introduces contemporary systems development paradigms such as model-based systems engineering, agile development, enterprise architecture methods, systems of systems, family of systems, rapid prototyping, and more. It focuses on the connection between the high-level systems engineering methodologies and detailed optical analytical methods to analyze, and understand optical systems performance capabilities. Organized into three distinct sections, the book covers modern, fundamental, and general systems engineering principles, methods, and techniques needed throughout an optical system’s development lifecycle (SDLC); optical systems building blocks that provide necessary optical systems analysis methods, techniques, and technical fundamentals; and an integrated case study that unites these two areas. It provides enough theory, analytical content, and technical depth that you will be able to analyze optical systems from both a systems and technical perspective.
