Book Description
In modern engineering practice, more different types of concrete structures are used. Current applications in the construction of modern structures, or applications in the strengthening and reinforcement of existing structures, require the analysis of structures of different material properties and shapes exposed to different types of loads such as quasi-static, dynamic, cyclic, impact or seismic. In practice, several experimental tests exist that provide new insights into concrete as a material at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. These results significantly increase knowledge about the behavior of concrete as a material. Such tests are expensive, but their significance lies in the possibility of implementing material behavior in new numerical models. The development of new numerical models can simulate the behavior of concrete as a building material with improved properties due to a new type of aggregate, some chemical composition, etc. Also numerical models can simulate the behavior of concrete structures whose load capacity can be increased form of fastening. This special issue collected and presented experimental results as well as new numerical simulations of the behavior of concrete as a material and concrete structures. A thorough understanding, which processes affect the reduction of strength and the formation of cracks in concrete, is key to the analysis of existing materials and design of improved innovative materials of concrete and concrete structures.

High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials V

High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials V PDF Author: S. Hernandez
Publisher: WIT Press
ISBN: 1784664715
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
The use of novel materials and new structural concepts nowadays is not restricted to highly technical areas like aerospace, aeronautical applications or the automotive industry, but affects all engineering fields including those such as civil engineering and architecture. The included contributions highlight the latest developments in design and manufacturing. Most high-performance structures require the development of a generation of new materials, which can more easily resist a range of external stimuli or react in a non-conventional manner. Particular emphasis is placed on intelligent structures and materials as well as the application of computational methods for their modelling, control and management. The book also addresses the topic of design optimisation. Contributions cover numerical methods, different optimisation techniques and new software. Optimisation problems include those related to the size, shape and topology of structures and materials. Optimisation techniques have much to offer to those involved in the design of new industrial products, as the appearance of powerful commercial computer codes has created a fertile field for the incorporation of optimisation in the design process of all engineering disciplines. The performance of structures under shock and impact loads is another area covered. The increasing need to protect civilian infrastructure and industrial facilities against unintentional loads arising from accidental impact and explosion events as well as terrorist attacks is reflected in the sustained interest worldwide. While advances have been made in recent decades, many challenges remain, such as developing more effective and efficient blast and impact mitigation approaches or assessing the uncertainties associated with large and small scale testing and validation of numerical and analytical models. The overall aim is to move towards a better understanding of the critical issues relating to the testing behaviour, modelling and analyses of protective structures against blast and impact loading. The studies contained in this volume were presented at the International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Structures and Materials Encompassing Shock and Impact Loading and address issues involving advanced types of structures, particularly those based on new concepts, and shock and impact resistance.

Simulation of Fresh Concrete Flow

Simulation of Fresh Concrete Flow PDF Author: Nicolas Roussel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401788847
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
This work deals with numerical simulations of fresh concrete flows. After the first introductory chapter dealing with the various physical phenomena involved in flows of fresh cementitious materials, the aim of the second chapter is to give an overview of the work carried out on simulation of flow of cement-based materials using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This includes governing equations, constitutive equations, analytical and numerical solutions, and examples showing simulations of testing, mixing and castings. The third chapter focuses on the application of Discrete Element Method (DEM) in simulating the flow of fresh concrete. The fourth chapter is an introductory text about numerical errors both in CFD and DEM whereas the fifth and last chapter give some recent examples of numerical simulations developed by various authors in order to simulate the presence of grains or fibers in a non-Newtonian cement matrix.
