Pour l’enfant d’école maternelle, la première activité réellement mathématique est l’entrée dans la quantité par la connaissance des entiers naturels et leur application au dénombrement. Car, si l’appréhension de la grandeur est d’abord perceptible, elle ne se structure que grâce aux nombres, lesquels sont d’abord des mots, avant d’être des concepts indépendants des collections d’objets qu’ils qualifient ou des séries qu’ils ordonnent. Compter est une action fondatrice dans la construction du concept de nombre, historiquement (pour les civilisations) et génétiquement (pour l’enfant). En ce sens, il est regrettable que les pratiques de dénombrement se soient trouvées un moment écartées de la pédagogie du numérique au profit d’exercices logiques qui gardent d’ailleurs leur intérêt à condition de ne pas exclure une fréquentation précoce et active de la numération parlée et écrite. Cette mobilisation des nombres dits ou écrits, les auteurs l’illustrent concrètement à travers une gamme d’activités prenant place naturellement dans la vie quotidienne de la classe et couvrant les divers niveaux d’âge, de deux à six ans. Ces activités, effectivement mises en œuvre dans de nombreuses classes maternelles, ont montré que, chez les jeunes enfants, des capacités numériques étaient présentes, plus tôt qu’on ne le pensait, constatation qui rejoint certaines hypothèses actuelles de la psychologie génétique. Aide aux enseignants dans leur pratique journalière, cet ouvrage incitera à la réflexion sur les potentialités enfantines dans le domaine logico-mathématique.

This twenty-third ICMI Study addresses for the first time mathematics teaching and learning in the primary school (and pre-school) setting, while also taking international perspectives, socio-cultural diversity and institutional constraints into account. One of the main challenges of designing the first ICMI primary school study of this kind is the complex nature of mathematics at the early level. Accordingly, a focus area that is central to the discussion was chosen, together with a number of related questions. The broad area of Whole Number Arithmetic (WNA), including operations and relations and arithmetic word problems, forms the core content of all primary mathematics curricula. The study of this core content area is often regarded as foundational for later mathematics learning. However, the principles and main goals of instruction on the foundational concepts and skills in WNA are far from universally agreed upon, and practice varies substantially from country to country. As such, this study presents a meta-level analysis and synthesis of what is currently known about WNA, providing a useful base from which to gauge gaps and shortcomings, as well as an opportunity to learn from the practices of different countries and contexts.
