Untold Stories of the Spanish Civil War

Untold Stories of the Spanish Civil War PDF Author: Raanan Rein
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1003824935
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
This is the first scholarly volume to offer an insight into the less known stories of women, children, and international volunteers in the Spanish Civil War. Special attention is given to volunteers of different historical experiences, especially Jews, and voices from less researched countries in the context of the Spanish war, such as Palestine and Turkey. Of an interdisciplinary nature, this volume brings together historians and literary scholars from different countries. Their research is based on newly found primary sources in both national and private archives, as well as on post-essentialist methodological insights for women’s history, Jewish history, and studies on belonging. By bringing together a group of emerging and senior scholars from different countries, we highlight the polyphony of voices of diverse individuals drawn into the Spanish Civil War. Contributors to this volume have explored new or little researched primary sources found in archives and documentary centers, including papers held by relatives of the people we study. The volume is aimed at both scholarly and non-scholarly public, including any readers interested in the Spanish Civil War, twentieth-century European history, Jewish studies, women’s history, or anti-Fascism. The volume can be used in both undergraduate college courses and in postgraduate university seminars.

Seen and Heard in Mexico

Seen and Heard in Mexico PDF Author: Elena Jackson Albarran
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 0803266847
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
During the first two decades following the Mexican Revolution, children in the country gained unprecedented consideration as viable cultural critics, social actors, and subjects of reform. Not only did they become central to the reform agenda of the revolutionary nationalist government; they were also the beneficiaries of the largest percentage of the national budget. While most historical accounts of postrevolutionary Mexico omit discussion of how children themselves experienced and perceived the sudden onslaught of resources and attention, Elena Jackson Albarrán, in Seen and Heard in Mexico, places children’s voices at the center of her analysis. Albarrán draws on archived records of children’s experiences in the form of letters, stories, scripts, drawings, interviews, presentations, and homework assignments to explore how Mexican childhood, despite the hopeful visions of revolutionary ideologues, was not a uniform experience set against the monolithic backdrop of cultural nationalism, but rather was varied and uneven. Moving children from the aesthetic to the political realm, Albarrán situates them in their rightful place at the center of Mexico’s revolutionary narrative by examining the avenues through which children contributed to ideas about citizenship and nation.

Exploring Intersectionality and Women in STEM

Exploring Intersectionality and Women in STEM PDF Author: Balderas, Luz Idalia
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
A persistent challenge infects the vast setting of academic pursuits; the enduring gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Despite incremental progress, women continue to face formidable obstacles, ranging from entrenched stereotypes to institutional oversights. The urgency of addressing this issue cannot be overstated, as evidenced by UNESCO's revelation that less than 30% of the world's researchers and scientists are women. Exploring Intersectionality and Women in STEM seizes this pivotal moment, unraveling the complexities of the gender gap in STEM and daring to propose transformative solutions. This book is not just an analysis of disparities; it is a dynamic and initiative-taking guide for researchers, STEM students, and practitioners. By immersing oneself in its pages, the reader becomes an agent of change, armed with insights into life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and health sciences. Through a transdisciplinary lens, the book illuminates a path toward a more inclusive and equitable future.

International Encyclopedia of Adolescence

International Encyclopedia of Adolescence PDF Author: Jeffrey Jensen Arnett
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135887470
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 1214

Book Description
In pre-industrial societies, people moved from childhood to adulthood directly, getting married and going to work early in life. Although this still holds true for many cultures, in countries such as the USA or Japan, adolescence has become a specific stage of life, where young people are cultural trendsetters and market drivers. The International Encyclopedia of Adolescence is an exhaustive socio-cultural survey of young people around the world. The focus is cultural and historical, and the work offers a rarely found worldwide perspective. Entries are compiled by experts from many fields of study, including anthropology, history, psychology, and sociology. Unlike existing works, the Encyclopedia does not stress biological or psycho-pathological issues. It addresses myths and realities of adolescence by looking at the actual life of young people in regions as varied as Iran, India, France, the USA, or Japan. It also explains how teen cultures have developed in some countries and how young people deal with the conflicts between tradition and modernity in others. Country coverage examines cultural beliefs, gender, personal and cultural identity, relationships (familial), friends and peers, love and sexuality, education, work, media, problems, and outlook for the future, plus topics particular to the culture or region discussed.
