Uranium for Nuclear Power

Uranium for Nuclear Power PDF Author: Ian Hore-Lacy
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 0081003331
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 490

Book Description
Uranium for Nuclear Power: Resources, Mining and Transformation to Fuel discusses the nuclear industry and its dependence on a steady supply of competitively priced uranium as a key factor in its long-term sustainability. A better understanding of uranium ore geology and advances in exploration and mining methods will facilitate the discovery and exploitation of new uranium deposits. The practice of efficient, safe, environmentally-benign exploration, mining and milling technologies, and effective site decommissioning and remediation are also fundamental to the public image of nuclear power. This book provides a comprehensive review of developments in these areas. - Provides researchers in academia and industry with an authoritative overview of the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle - Presents a comprehensive and systematic coverage of geology, mining, and conversion to fuel, alternative fuel sources, and the environmental and social aspects - Written by leading experts in the field of nuclear power, uranium mining, milling, and geological exploration who highlight the best practices needed to ensure environmental safety

Nuclear Energy Now

Nuclear Energy Now PDF Author: Alan M. Herbst
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470129921
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
A timely and thought-provoking solution to the world's energy shortfall The dramatic increases in oil and natural gas prices, the finite supply of fossil fuels, and concerns over emissions and global warming are forcing us to consider alternatives. In this measured and knowledgeable book, energy experts Alan Herbst and George Hopley argue that the time has come for the U.S. to revitalize its nuclear generation assets in order to successfully meet growing domestic electricity requirements and lessen our dependence on foreign sources of energy. Nuclear Energy Now provides an informed look at the benefits and drawbacks associated with this controversial alternative to traditional energy sources. It opens with a brief overview of commercial nuclear development in the U.S. during the past half-century and moves on to discuss what the future may hold if new initiatives-supported by the Energy Policy Act of 2005-gain traction. Along the way, readers will find informed insights into why the need for nuclear power has become so critical and how we can safely add capacity in the coming years. Exploring all of the issues related to developing America's nuclear energy capabilities safely and cost-effectively, Nuclear Energy Now is a must-read for anyone concerned about our oil dependency, the environment, and future of the nation.

Energy Transformation

Energy Transformation PDF Author: Brett Roenigk
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Climatic changes
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
The U.S. Department of Energy projects that rapid growth in population and access to domestic resources will cause the Middle East’s energy consumption to increase by 95% from 2012 to 2040. Currently, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates do not have enough installed power capacity to handle this increase in consumption. Due to this, these states are looking to solar and nuclear power to diversify their energy sectors. This thesis’ focus is to examine the impending energy demand crisis that will affect Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Jordan. I argue that solar and nuclear power must play a vital role in these states’ energy sectors to stave off future power shortages, decrease reliance on domestic hydrocarbons and imported energy, and reduce CO2 emissions to lessen the effects of climate change. As nuclear energy capabilities for civilian use expand, so does the threat of nuclear terrorism or the possibility for countries to edge closer towards nuclear proliferation. The United States has a vested interest in stemming the proliferation of nuclear weapons and will need to be prepared to address this in the region in the future. Additionally, foreign powers are investing considerable resources and technology in the energy sectors in these states, which could erode U.S. influence in the region going forward.
