Pages : 285

Book Description
This volume contains the lectures presented by invited speakers at the IV La Rlibida International Summer School on Nuclear Physics. This was the IV edition of a summer school organized by our group every three years on topics related to nuclear physics. This Summer School was aimed mainly at young nuclear physicists, both theoreticians and experimentalists, engaged in research work at predoctoral or recent postdoctoral level. The topics treated in the three previous editions of the School were: "Heavy Ion Collisions", "Theory of Nuclear Structure and Reactions" and "Nuclear As trophysics". This year's School was entitled "Nuclear Physics at the Borderlines". Special emphasis was placed on those topics along which nuclear physics is ex pected to develop in the next few years. The aim of the School was to provide the attendants with an opportunity to get into close contact with experienced researchers and listen to their account of the present state-of-the-art in nuclear physics and the main future lines of development.

Frontiers and Borderlines in Many-particle Physics

Frontiers and Borderlines in Many-particle Physics PDF Author: R. A. Broglia
Publisher: North Holland
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 488

Book Description
Subjects at the forefront of many-particle research, like high-temperature superconductivity, the quantum Hall effect, heavy fermions, tunneling of quantal systems with many degrees of freedom, Monte Carlo calculations on a lattice etc., were presented. The meeting was well timed as it coincided with a very active period of research in the study of superconductivity and thus provided an excellent opportunity to assess some of the major developments that have taken place in the last years.

Atom Optics and Space Physics

Atom Optics and Space Physics PDF Author: E. Arimondo
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1586039903
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 519

Book Description
"The goal of this volume is to discuss the rapidly moving field of atom optics and interferometry with all its intricate aspects ranging from fundamental physics to applications and the theory of relativity. The breathtaking success in manipulating atoms using lasers has encouraged these two so far disjunct communities to move closer together and begin collaborations. After an introduction to atom optics and Bose-Einstein condensation, the theoretical foundations of cold atom interferometers, their use to test gravity, and their implementation in laboratory measurements of the earth rotation and of Newton's gravitational constant are discussed. Several papers discuss the characteristics of gyroscopes and interferometers as sensors for inertial forces, starting from gyroscopes based on light waves and comparing their sensitivity to those based on matter waves. The final topic is the variation of fundamental constants, a subject that during the last years has attracted a lot of --

Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder

Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder PDF Author: Valerie Porr, M.A.
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199752508
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by unstable moods, negative self-image, dangerous impulsivity, and tumultuous relationships. Many people with BPD excel in academics and careers while revealing erratic, self-destructive, and sometimes violent behavior only to those with whom they are intimate. Others have trouble simply holding down a job or staying in school. Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is a compassionate and informative guide to understanding this profoundly unsettling--and widely misunderstood--mental illness, believed to affect approximately 6% of the general population. Rather than viewing people with BPD as manipulative opponents in a bitter struggle, or pitying them as emotional invalids, Valerie Porr cites cutting-edge science to show that BPD is a true neurobiological disorder and not, as many come to believe, a character flaw or the result of bad parenting. Porr then clearly and accessibly explains what BPD is, which therapies have proven effective, and how to rise above the weighty stigma associated with the disorder. Offering families and loved ones supportive guidance that both acknowledges the difficulties they face and shows how they can be overcome, Porr teaches empirically-supported and effective coping behaviors and interpersonal skills, such as new ways of talking about emotions, how to be aware of nonverbal communication, and validating difficult experiences. These skills are derived from Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Mentalization-based Therapy, two evidence-based treatments that have proven highly successful in reducing family conflict while increasing trust. Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is an empowering and hopeful resource for those who wish to gain better understanding of the BPD experience--and to make use of these insights in day-to-day family interactions. Measurements of Neutrino Mass

Measurements of Neutrino Mass PDF Author: Fernando Ferroni
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1607500388
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 493

Book Description
"This volume offers a valuable insight into various aspects of the ongoing work directed at measuring neutrino mass. It took twenty years to refute the assertions of Bethe and Peierls that neutrinos were not observable, but it has since been realised that much can be learnt from these particles. The moral is, as Fiorini argues here, that the study of neutrinos was and remains demanding but rewarding. Subjects addressed in this volume include: clarifying the meaning of the Klapdor-Kleingrothaus results, probing the Majorana nature of neutrinos, observing lepton number violating effects for the first time, studying the end point of the spectrum in the search for neutrino masses and speculating whether it is possible to measure neutrino masses in cosmology. Lectures are enriched with rich historical overviews and valuable introductory material. Attention is also given to theoretical topics such as the evolution of the concept of mass in particle physics, a status report on neutrino oscillations and current discussion on neutrino masses. The reader is further reminded that neutrino masses may also have some bearing on the very origin of the matter among us, and have many deep links with other important lines of current physics research." --Book Jacket.

Protein Folding and Drug Design

Protein Folding and Drug Design PDF Author: Luis Serrano Romero
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1586037927
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
One of the great unsolved problems of science and also of physics is the prediction of the three dimensional structure of a protein from its amino acid sequence. It may be stated that the deep connection existing between physics and protein folding is not so much, or in any case not only, through physical methods, but through physical concepts.
