Attention is called to the considerable sensitivity of many uncertainty calculations to the magnitude of the long-ranged correlations which appear in covariance matrices. If such correlations do exist, they must be included in order to properly assess the impact of the uncertainties in the data. If, however, certain assumed long-range correlations are unrealistic, then analyses involving such correlation information are almost certain to produce misleading results. The issue is discussed in general terms, and its importance is illustrated by examples based in part on recent work from this laboratory. Some practical suggestions are offered for dealing with the matter of correlations in instances where the available information is incomplete. 23 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Results of measurements of neutron scattering from elemental rhenium are presented over two incident-energy regions: (1) 0.3-1.5 MeV, and (2) 4.5-10.0 MeV. The first of these supplements previously-reported work at this Laboratory, and the second consists of information in an entirely new energy range. These experimental results are interpreted in terms of optical-statistical and coupled-channels models, including consideration of dispersive effects, and of scalar and vector potentials. Some basic and applied physical implications of these considerations are discussed. Comparisons are made with other regional and/or global models, and with evaluated nuclear-data files used in applications.

This book describes the Proceedings of the International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology held at Jillich in May 1991. The conference was in a series of application oriented nuclear data conferences organized in the past under the auspices of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Nuclear Data Committee (NEANDC) and with the support of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Committee on Reactor Physics (NEACRP). It was the fIrst international conference on nuclear data held in Germany, with the scientific responsibility entrusted to the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry of the Research Centre Jillich. The scientific programme was established by the International Programme Committee in consultation with the International Advisers, and the NEA and IAEA cooperated in the organization. A total of 328 persons from 37 countries and fIve international organizations participated. The scope of these Proceedings extends to a wide range of interdisciplinary topics dealing with measu rement, calculation, evaluation and application of nuclear data, with a major emphasis on numerical data. An evaluated nuclear data file for thorium is described. The file extends over the energy range 0.049 (i.e., the inelastic-scattering threshold) to 20.0 MeV and is formulated within the framework of the ENDF system. The input data base, the evaluation procedures and judgments, and ancillary experiments carried out in conjunction with the evaluation are outlined. The file includes: neutron total cross sections, neutron scattering processes, neutron radiative capture cross sections, fission cross sections, (n;2n) and (n;3n) processes, fission properties (e.g., nu-bar and delayed neutron emission) and photon production processes. Regions of uncertainty are pointed out particularly where new measured results would be of value. The file is extended to thermal energies using previously reported resonance evaluations thereby providing a complete file for neutronic calculations. Integral data tests indicated that the file was suitable for neutronic calculations in the MeV range.

This volume presents recent progress in the improvement of the nuclear database needed for the development of Generation IV nuclear energy systems. The Generation IV International Forum (GIF) identified six advanced concepts for sustainable nuclear energy production at competitive prices and with advanced safety, with special attention to nuclear non-proliferation and physical protection issues, minimization of long-lived radiotoxic waste, and optimum natural resource utilization System groups have been established for studying these concepts in detail, and nuclear data are an inherent part of these studies.
