To furnish insight into correlations of electronic and local structure and photoactivity, arrays of short and long TiO2 nanotubes were synthesized by electrochemical anodization of Ti foil, followed by thermal treatment in O2 (oxidizing), Ar (inert), and H2 (reducing) environments. The physical and electronic structures of these nanotubes were probed with x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and synchrotron-based x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and correlated with their photocatalytic properties. The photocatalytic activity of the nanotubes was evaluated by monitoring the degradation of methyl orange under UV-VIS light irradiation. Results show that upon annealing at 350 °C all as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube samples partially transform to the anatase structure, with variations in the degree of crystallinity and in the concentration of local defects near the nanotubes' surface (~5 nm) depending on the annealing conditions. Degradation of methyl orange was not detectable for the as-anodized TiO2 nanotubes regardless of their length. The annealed long nanotubes demonstrated detectable catalytic activity, which was more significant with the H2-annealed nanotubes than with the Ar- and O2-annealed nanotube samples. This enhanced photocatalytic response of the H2-annealed long nanotubes relative to the other samples is positively correlated with the presence of a larger concentration of lattice defects (such as Ti3+ and anticipated oxygen vacancies) and a slightly lower degree of crystallinity near the nanotube surface. These physical and electronic structural attributes impact the efficacy of visible light absorption; moreover, the increased concentration of surface defects is postulated to promote the generation of hydroxyl radicals and thus accelerate the photodegradation of the methyl orange. The information obtained from this study provides unique insight into the role of the near-surface electronic and defect structure, crystal structure, and the local chemical environment on the photocatalytic activity and may be employed for tailoring the materials' properties for photocatalysis and other energy-related applications.

Under suitable conditions, conventional one-step anodic oxidation is available to grow TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) and TiO2 nanowires/nanotubes; meanwhile, two-step anodic oxidation allows fabricating some novel TNAs with spectacular morphologies such as highly ordered TNAs, bamboo-type TNAs, and lotus root-shaped TNAs. The formation mechanisms of these nanostructures during the anodic oxidation processes are elusive via studying effects of several key parameters such as oxidizing voltage, processing time, and electrolytes. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the TNA-based nanomaterials is characterized by the degradation of pharmaceutical model, methylene blue, or the photoelectrochemical effect.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a wide band gap, robust, n-type semiconductor whose transformation into vertically-oriented nanotube arrays makes them suitable electron percolation pathways for vectorial charge transfer togerther with high surface area. Growth of self-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays as a membrane or on non-native substrates is critical for exploiting the full potential of this nanostructure in a variety of applications. Although regular TNAs on native substrates constitute one of the most potent semiconductors for a variety of applications, to date, less research has been conducted on engineering the geometry of such structures for photon management. In this dissertation, a fundamental investigation into TNA-based photon management by periodically modulated titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (PMTiNTs) and double layer TNAs on native substrates was carried out. The present work shows that bilayer film stacks consisting of nanotubes with small (~60 nm) and large (~200 nm) diameters, respectively improve the optical absorption. In the second part of this thesis, wherein the geometry of these unique nanostructures is engineered, galvanostatic pulse- generated modulation was used. The highly ordered PMTiNTs have been reported, which constitute bottom-up fabricated one-dimensional photonic crystals. As a last phase of the synthesis process, highly sophisticated vacuum deposition based techniques were used to investigate the influence of a variety of deposition rates and pressures at room temperataure on anodic nanotube growth formation on non-native substrates. In the third phase of the work, X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopic studies were used to investigate the interfacial band alignment for photocatalytic charge separation in TiO2 nanotube arrays coated with CuPt nanoparticles. In the last phase, low energy surfaces repellent to a wide spectrum of liquids by functionalizing TiO2 nanotubes arrays using monolayers of two different fluorinated hydrocarbon molecules were studied.
