Book Description
Excerpt from Noteworthy Paintings in American Private Collections We are not all conscious of the amount and curious values of what is being gathered here, and many would be surprised at the variety of interests repre sented in the personal ownerships of works of art collected in our Western World. Some exhibitions and some notices are making us aware of this mass of treasure. Of course we can see how the necessities of a more easy or more lux urions and even a more Splendid manner of living are filling our houses with works of art, as representing these imagined necessities. But we are less ac quainted with the manner in which this bringing together of works of art has often a character which is separate from that of splendor or appearance, and is solely influenced by the choice of good taste or the special wishes of the owners. Therein the character of many of these gatherings have peculiar shapes varying through many forms and assuming very opposite directions. It might be im portant and it certainly would be very interesting to note the forms of these col lections or gatherings at the moment of their first taking shape. Later the pos sible changes of manner of life, the displacements of fortune, or of inheritance are likely to alter these conditions and to make these collections lose their personal character, to destroy the record of first origins and to mass all together in a more commonplace appearance. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Ancient and Modern Paintings and Other Objects of Art, Collected by the Late William M. Laffan: To Be Sold at Unrestricted Public Sale U connoisseur of pictures and porcelains. His knowledge wus profound and catholic, and he was naturally endowed With the sixth scnsc of the collector, an intuition which sccql him in the delicate task of selection and attribution. Hc gathered his art trcusurcs primarily to gratify his personal predilections, and not with the purpose of selling them. His instinctive tact and wide experience corned for him an intcr national reputation. Little wonder that his judgments wcrc sought for, tlcfcrrul to, and in the majority of cases were deemed final. His catholicity is proved by this present collection, which ranges from latter-day American painting's to Italian and Flemish primitives, from curly English por traiture to Italian Renaissance, from Dutch genre to modern French Impressionism. From Lucas Crnnach to Filippo Lippi. Mr. Lull'sn lovod a beautiful work of art for itself, whether Oriental or Occidental. Schools greatly interested him, but the prestige of a more name ncithcr prejudiced nor allured him. Though. Strictly spcaking, he was a conserva tive, he was not insensiblc to the manifestations of contem porary art. He was thoroughly aware of thc pitfalls that abound for the expert, and in making an attribution he was ever prudent and resourceful. He was intimately ac quainted with all the famous collections, public and private, both in America and Europe. His memory was remarkable, hie erudition not easily matched. He was truly an amateur of eclectic tastes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Melancholy of Masterpieces PDF Author: Flaminia Gennari Santoni
Publisher: 5Continents
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
The book is a fresh investigation of American collecting between 1900 and 1914 and of the impact of transatlantic displacements and mass media on the public perception of old master paintings. Rather than a consideration of the itineraries of their acquisitions, this is an analysis of the political, cultural and social implication of the phenomenon and how it functioned within American society and in relation to Europe. The first three chapters of the book analyse how the American press (The New York Times, The Nation, Century, Scribner's, McClure's and the World's Work) exploited the phenomenon, turning it into a journalistic genre in which the rhetoric of nationalism and civilisation, as well as that of business and speculation, provided the style of the narrative. Two aspects of the press coverage are thoroughly investigated: the collectors' and experts' public role. Chapters four to six are devoted to a case study of an unknown, but extraordinary publishing venture, Noteworthy Paintings in
