Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on the International S. S. Lessons for 1883, Vol. 3: July to September The subject-matter of this book is the fulfilment of the work which was given to Moses to do, but which had been left unfinished by him, owing to that sin which brought after it the judgment on him and his brother Aaron. It may be divided into three parts: I. The conquest of the land, ch. 1. Xii though, as a matter of arrangement, if one preferred it, the earlier chapters might be placed separately as an introduction, with the history Of the crossing Of the Jordan and the restoration of the people to the full enjoyment of their privileges as the professing church of God. 11. The allotment made of the land to the tribes, including along with this the appointment Of the cities Of refuge, and the provision of cities for the Levites, ch. Xiii. -xxi. Perhaps ch. Xxii. May be regarded as an appendix to this the dismissal of the eastern tribes to their homes, and the jealousy for purity of worship; otherwise it might be classed with the two chapters which follow. III. The jealousy of Joshua for the godli ness and obedience of the people, which involved their future welfare and a few closing verses which tell of the death of him and his companions and fellow-workers, ch. Xxiii. Xxiv. The period embraced by the history, excepting these last two chapters (which may refer to a time fifteen or twenty years later), was seven years Of war, and whatever time was occupied in the division of the land, we are not told how much. If the question be asked, Who wrote the book of Joshua we have no means of giving a direct reply. If any one affirms that Joshua was himself the writer (with the manifest exception of the account of his own death, etc., in the closing verses), I do not see any valid evidence to the contrary. And I know nothing more natural than to suppose that if Joshua did not write the book with his own hand, it was composed from his papers by some who were about him. Principal Douglass. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on the International S. S. Lessons for 1883, Vol. 1: January to March Risen Lord, etc. The present title would lead one to expect a detailed account of the work of the Apostles. But, except in the case of Peter and Paul, there is not even an approach to this. John appears in the history only three times, and then rather as the companion of Peter, than as doing anything him self; and concerning James, his brother, we have no notice except of his execution by Herod. The book was written by Luke, probably at Rome, though some say Achaia, about A. D. 63. It could not have been written before Paul's first imprison ment at Rome (a. D. 61 - 63) because the history embraces that event; nor after his release, because it contains no record of his liberation. It has been described as a special history of the planting and extension of the church, both among Jews and Gentiles, by the gradual establishing of radiating centres or sources of influence at certain salient points throughout a large part of the empire, beginning at Jerusalem and ending at Rome. The history naturally falls into two general divisions: the first (chaps. I.-xii.) records the planting and extension of Christianity among the Jews. Jerusalem is the centre, and Peter the prominent figure. The second (chaps. Xui.-xxviii.) has for its subject the planting and growth of Christianity among the Gentiles with Antioch as the centre, and Paul the most prominent actor. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on the International S. S. Lessons: For 1884 With these questions in mind certain men came down from J udea and investigated. Their discoveries could not have been satisfactory. They began to teach the brethren, saying, except ye be circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved. They could not go far in such a course without meeting Paul. His answer to them, and his indignation at their teaching are more clearly brought to view in his allusion to the subject in the Epistle to the Galatians (2: 1 He declared in substance that what they taught was not the Gospel as he understood it, and had preached it. He did not consider him self an apostle of the church of Jerusalem; his appointment and authority he had from Christ himself. Nor were the con tions at Antioch and in Asia Minor to be in subjection to e Jerusalem Church; such an affiliation and subordination were not in the least necessary to the unity of the church of Christ; her centre was not on earth but in heaven, whither Christ had gone, and while she held fast by her Divine Head, she was essentially one, and needed no other unity. Such was Paul's doctrine; and the Christians of Antioch were with him. It was squarely Opposed to the views of the Hebrew Christians. Both parties stood their ground, and there was no small dissension and questioning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
