Book Description
Excerpt from Campaigns of a War Correspondent But I do not wish to stand between my old friend and his public. This foreword is written merely to afford a glimpse of the man in the latter day, to set down, however feebly, a great respect and appreciation, and to ask pardon of the reader for the many shortcomings that the compression of this life-story has made inevitable. The best excuse may be found ulti mately in the fact that there is ample material left for the making of another volume, should the public call for it. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters of a War Correspondent NO more graphic, faithful, or venturous correspondent than Charles A. Page looked on at our civil war, and none more truthfully or graphically described its momentous events. If Page says that it is so, was a common remark of Horace Greeley's in the Tribune editorial rooms; and the subsequent motto of the Sun, If you see it in the Sun, ' it is so, was merely Charles A. Dana's appropriation of this familiar saying of Mr. Greeley. He once met Mr. Page on a railway train and said to him: We are greatly pleased with your work you are quick and graphic, and give us the news early, and we must have it early; but, Mr. Page, you are the most expensive young man the Tribune has ever employed. To this Mr. Page re plied: Early news is expensive news, Mr. Greeley; if I have the watermelons and whiskey ready when the officers come along from the fight, I get the news without asking questions. Book Description
So even when the men were formed into three sides of a hollow square, they were scarcely able to distinguish one another in the uncertain light of the morning. There were about three hundred soldiers in the formation. They belonged to the volunteers, and they deployed upon the plain with their band in front playing a jaunty quickstep, while their officers galloped from one side to the other through the grass, seeking a suitable place for the execution. Outside the line the band still played merrily. A few men and boys, who had been dragged out of their beds by the music, moved about the ridges behind the soldiers, half-clothed, unshaven, sleepy-eyed, yawning, stretching themselves nervously and shivering in the cool, damp air of the morning.
