Book Description
Excerpt from Noted Men and Historical Narrations of Ancient Milton Ladies and Gentlemen of the School Committee: At your request I have prepared brief statements respecting those of our early inhabitants whose names you propose to affix to our common schools. The men whom you have selected were in their day, without exception, representative men. They were men of stalwart character, strong, wise, God-fearing men; earnest in purpose and decided in action, who could be safely trusted with the affairs of Church and State. Such are the individuals whom you have selected, from the vast number of their compeers, to give names to the schools of Milton, whose rare qualities of heart and mind, in many particulars, all our sons and daughters may well emulate. Never were more truthful words uttered than those of Governor Stoughton, in his Election Sermon, 1668: - "God sifted a whole nation that he might send choice grain over into this wilderness." Belcher School. It is proposed to name the East School the Belcher School. Jonathan Belcher was born in Cambridge, Mass., Jan. 8, 1681, and graduated at Harvard College in 1699, in a class of twelve. Book Description
Excerpt from Milton This man cuts us all out, and the Ancients too, Dryden is reported to have said. But this man intended to do no less, and formally announced his intention. It is impossible to outface Milton, or to abash him with praise. His most enthusiastic eulogists are compelled merely to echo the remarks of his earliest and greatest critic, himself. Yet with all this, none of the later critics, not the most cavalier nor the dullest, has dared to call him vain. His estimate of himself, offered as simple fact, has been accepted in the same spirit, and one abyss of ineptitude still yawns for the heroic folly, or the clownish courage, of the New Criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from Milton: With an Introduction and Notes Johnson's Lives of the Poets were issued between 1779 and 1781. His original undertaking was merely to furnish short biographical prefaces to an edition of the poets from Cowley downwards, which in 1777 certain booksellers contemplated publishing. The task was one, says Macaulay (biography of Jolmson), for which he was pre-eminently qualified. His knowledge of the literary history of England since the Restoration was unrivalled, That knowledge he had derived partly from books, and partly from sources which had long been closed; from old Grub Street traditions; from the talk of forgotten poetasters and pamphleteers who had long been lying in parish vaults; from the recollections of such men as Gilbert Walmesley, who had conversed with the wits of Button; Cibber, who had mutilated the plays of two generations of dramatists; Orrery, who had been ad mitted to the society of Swift; and Savage, who had dered services of no very honourable kind to Pepe.
