Nevada Northern Railway

Nevada Northern Railway PDF Author: Mark S. Bassett
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738574752
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
The Nevada Northern Railway is the sole survivor from a grand era when railroads served mines throughout the state. Built in 1905-1906 to develop the incredible copper deposits of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company in White Pine County, it was--and still is--a workaday railroad. Although its primary purpose was to haul ore, it eventually served the community with a daily passenger train between East Ely and Cobre until 1941. Over 4.5 million people rode the trains, and a mountain of copper ore was moved. In 1983, the Nevada Northern Railway ceased operating, and two years later the entire ore line, including the railroad's yard and shop facilities in East Ely, was donated to the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation that now operates the railway as a museum. Instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, the museum preserves a working steam railroad, delighting train enthusiasts year-round with passenger service and special seasonal excursions.

The Northern Utopia

The Northern Utopia PDF Author: Peter Fjågesund
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004485015
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 415

Book Description
In the nineteenth century, the ancient ‘filial tie’ between Britain and Norway was rediscovered by a booming tourist industry which took thousands across the North Sea to see the wonders of the fjords, the fjelds, and the beauties of the North Cape. This illustrated volume, for the first time, collects together vivid – and predominantly first-hand – impressions of the country recorded by nearly two hundred British travellers and other commentators, including Thomas Malthus, Charlotte Brontë, Lord Tennyson, and William Gladstone. In a rich selection of travel writing, fiction, poetry, journalism, political speeches, and art, Norway emerges as a refreshingly natural utopia, happily free from her imperial neighbour’s increasing problems with the side-effects of industrialisation. This is a fascinating examination of the people, institutions, customs, language and environment of Norway seen through the eyes of the British. Using the tools of literary and historical scholarship, Fjågesund and Symes set these perceptions in their nineteenth-century context, throwing light on such issues as progress, art and aesthetics, democracy, religion, nationhood, race, class, and gender, all of which occupied Europe at the time. The Northern Utopia will be of particular interest to students of British and Scandinavian cultural history, literature and travel writing. It will also enthral all those who love Norway.

Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway

Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway PDF Author: Deborah Kohl Kremer
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738567730
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway is a slice of Americana pie. Known also as U.S. 25 and the Lexington-Covington Turnpike, the once-rural route connects the urban cores of Cincinnati, Covington, and Newport to Central Kentucky. Originally a buffalo trail and named in the early 1800s, the route became a paved national highway in the 1920s. The creation of the thoroughfare encouraged the growth of several communities along its route that still thrive today. Images of America: Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway captures historic images of the people and places along the Dixie Highway beginning in Covington and heading south through Boone County. The photographs--some taken as early as the mid-1800s--depict time's influence as well as those things that remain the same. The 200 images inside offer readers a chance to revisit the friends, familiar sites, and memorable times enjoyed along Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467145114
Category : History
Languages : en

Book Description
Eastern North Carolina is a land of contrasts, and its crime stories bear this out. A lovelorn war hero or a stalker? Conniving wife or consummate homemaker? Murder or suicide? The answers can be as puzzling as the questions. Mystery author Cathy Pickens details an assortment of quirky cases, including a duo of poisoning cases more than one hundred years apart, a band of folk hero swamp outlaws, sex swingers and a couple of mummies. Each story has, in its way, helped define Eastern North Carolina and its history.

Mantua

Mantua PDF Author: Sue Kovach Shuman
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467106747
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
Mantua, Virginia, sprouted outside Washington, DC, after World War II because of its convenient location between the Little River Turnpike and US Route 50, roads that made commuting into the nation's capital easy. But Mantua's roots go back to a 1685 Northern Neck of Virginia land grant. Gristmills operated along the Accotink Creek, which still defines the terrain. Civil War major John Henry Chichester's family named Mantua, which stretched south to Glenbrook Road farms, under three miles from the Fairfax Court House, where the first Confederate soldier was killed. The area gradually changed from farms where grain grew and livestock grazed to a wooded suburb with Mid-Century Modern houses. Federal workers and military personnel put down roots, establishing a community. An underground oil spill in 1990 united residents determined to overcome unwanted national attention and continue a small-town America lifestyle in the shadow of the nation's capital.

Imagining the Supernatural North

Imagining the Supernatural North PDF Author: Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough
Publisher: University of Alberta
ISBN: 1772122939
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
“Turning to face north, face the north, we enter our own unconscious. Always, in retrospect, the journey north has the quality of dream.” Margaret Atwood, “True North” In this interdisciplinary collection, sixteen scholars from twelve countries explore the notion of the North as a realm of the supernatural. This region has long been associated with sorcerous inhabitants, mythical tribes, metaphysical forces of good and evil, and a range of supernatural qualities. It was both the sacred abode of the gods and a feared source of menacing invaders and otherworldly beings. Whether from the perspective of traditional Jewish lore or of contemporary black metal music, few motifs in European cultural history show such longevity and broad appeal. Contributors: Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough, Angela Byrne, Danielle Marie Cudmore, Stefan Donecker, Brenda S. Gardenour Walter, Silvije Habulinec, Erica Hill, Jay Johnston, Maria Kasyanova, Jan Leichsenring, Shane McCorristine, Jennifer E.
