Book Description
North Carolina sent more than 125,000 men and boys to fight the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives on the battlefield or by disease. Most were sent home for burial in family plots or community churchyards but thousands could not be identified or could not be transported and were interred in unmarked graves across the country. Many never had an obituary published. Others had obituaries that included directions to the deceased's final resting place. This compilation of obituaries from North Carolina newspapers documents the date and cause of death for hundreds of soldiers, with many providing place of burial, surviving relatives, last words, accounts by comrades and details of military service.

Book Description
North Carolina sent over 125,000 men and boys to service in the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives through disease, accidents, or on the battlefield during the four war years. Previous to the war, death was a more private affair, with family and friends there to comfort the dying and bid him or her farewell. Burials took place in the community in a churchyard or in a selected place where generations of a family lay. But with the war, what would happen to the bodies of their loved ones-fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, and other relatives so far away from home? This book, a compilation of obituaries written in NC newspapers, seeks to answer that question-what happened to a loved one? There are approximately 1200 names in this collection.

Cadets on Campus

Cadets on Campus PDF Author: John A. Coulter
Publisher: Texas A&M University Press
ISBN: 1623495229
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
Since the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1802, more than eight hundred military schools have existed in this country. The vast majority have closed their doors, been absorbed into other educational institutions, or otherwise faded away, but others soldier on, adapting to changing times and changing educational needs. While many individual institutions have had their histories written or their stories told, to date no single book has attempted to explore the full scope of the military school in American history. Cadets on Campus is the first book to cover the origin, history, and culture of the nation’s military schools—secondary and collegiate—and this breadth of coverage will appeal to historians and alumni alike. Author John Alfred Coulter identifies several key figures who were pivotal to the formation of military education, including Sylvanus Thayer, the “father of West Point,” and Alden Partridge, the founder of the school later known as Norwich University, the first private military school in the country. He also reveals that military schools were present across the nation, despite the conventional wisdom that most military schools, and, indeed, the culture that surrounds them, were limited to the South. Coulter addresses the shuttering of military schools in the era after the Vietnam War and then notes a curious resurgence of interest in military education since the turn of the century.

The 55th North Carolina in the Civil War

The 55th North Carolina in the Civil War PDF Author: Jeffrey M. Girvan
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
This comprehensive history tells the story of the men who served in the 55th North Carolina from its formation in 1862 through its dissolution in 1865. Drawing on letters, memoirs, diaries and recollections, it depicts the Civil War through the eyes of the soldiers, showing what it was like to fight for the Confederacy. While providing information on the battles in which the 55th North Carolina took part (including the little known Suffolk campaign), the main focus of the work is the life of the men--the ever-present influence of politics and religion as well as the effects of disease and combat. Appendices provide a breakdown of the companies in the regiment; the regimental roster; a list of men who died of disease; and a record of the men from the 55th who were killed in battle. Contemporary photographs are also included.
