Nonlinear Oscillations of a Maxwellian Plasma

Nonlinear Oscillations of a Maxwellian Plasma PDF Author: Hari K. Sen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Magnetohydrodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 18

Book Description
Exact non-linear wave solutions are obtained for waves stationary in a uniformly moving frame for the case of a Maxwellian electron plasma in a uniform ion background. It is found that there are no waves below a minimum wave velocity; anharmonic waves develop above the critical velocity, but only up to a maximum amplitude, depending on the wave velocity; frequency amplitude relations indicate that small amplitude linearized theory is not a good approximation, except for large wave velocities; and in the limit of zero amplitude, twice the frequency of oscillation given by linearized theory for any wave velocity is obtained. Nonlinear Theory of Electron Oscillations of a Collisionless Plasma in a Uniform Magnetic Field

Nonlinear Theory of Electron Oscillations of a Collisionless Plasma in a Uniform Magnetic Field PDF Author: H. K. Sen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Doppler effect
Languages : en
Pages : 60

Book Description
Possibility of excitation of finite amplitude longitudinal waves in a collisionless and cold plasma in the presence of uniform magnetic field is demonstrated. Such waves are found to be anharmonic in shape, in contrast to the usual harmonic, that is, sinusoidal waves of the linear theory. These nonlinear plasma waves arise as a result of nonlinear motion and the dispersive nature of plasma media. The two competing processes, nonlinearity and dispersion in a moving plasma medium strike a balance to produce a quasi-steady state which can support finite amplitude waves. These waves are associated with large amplitude oscillating electric fields which may be responsible for coherent radio-to-microwave radiation from coronal plasma and particle acceleration during solar flares. The estimate of sporadic electromagnetic and particulate radiation is important for application to the solar flare patrol and the Air Force Communications System. (Author).

The Frequency of Nonlinear Plasma Oscillations

The Frequency of Nonlinear Plasma Oscillations PDF Author: H. Derfler
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Magnetohydrodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
The frequency of plane standing waves of electrons moving through a background of infinitely heavy ions is strictly independent of amplitue as long as the electron velocity is a unique function of position. This result is contrary to those presented in recent publications by S. Amer, J. Electronics and Control, 5:105-13, 158 and L. Gold, J. Electronics and Control, 6:548-549, 1959. The frequencies of spherical and cylindicl plsma oscillations, however, do depend upon the amplitude of the oscillation. AsA RESULT, ANY PHASE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ELECTRONS EVENTUALLY WILL BE DESTROYED AND THE ELECTRON VELOCIY BECOMES MULTIVALUED. Therefore steady free oscillations do not persist even in a cold plasma. (Author).

Chaos And Structures In Nonlinear Plasmas

Chaos And Structures In Nonlinear Plasmas PDF Author: C Wendell Horton, Jr
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814499048
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
This book develops the subject of nonlinear plasma physics from a general physics perspective. It begins with a description of nonlinear oscillations, the parametric instability, the pendulum, and the nonlinear island overlap criterion. The Kolomogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory is analyzed. Laboratory visualizations of the KAM theory are presented for experiments in toroidal plasma confinement and rotating fluids. The subjects of transport in E x B flows and geostrophic flows are developed in parallel, stressing the generality of the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equation. The dual nature of wave turbulence and vortex dynamics is developed for plasmas and geophysical flows. The presentation of the subject of nonlinear maps shows how maps are related to the nonlinear dynamics in plasma physics problems. Numerous space plasma and fusion physics examples are developed throughout the book. The final chapter deals with turbulence theory, renormalized mode coupling equations, and Kolomogorov-type spectra as modified for anisotropic plasmas.

Analytical Methods in Nonlinear Oscillations
