Book Description
Excerpt from The Rise and Decline of Welsh Nonconformity: An Impartial Investigation First of all there is the general question, How are we to account for its sudden beginning, and ultimate success P How are we to explain it in the light of the fact, that the movement was so radically and irreconcilably Opposed, in form and in principle, to the existing Church, which was recognised as national, and which was considered to express the religious feelings and convictions of the people at large The Anglican Church had its roots in the distant past, with its traditions, its theory of Divine right, its artistic accessories to Divine worship, its priestly ministry, and its endowments that existed long before the time of legal memory. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Protestant Nonconformity in Wales: From Its Rise to the Present Time The history of Nonconformity in Wales has hitherto been comparatively unknown to English readers. There is not, among the endless variety of works, on almost every conceivable subject, with which English literature abounds, a single volume on the rise and progress of Nonconformity in the Principality. To supply that defect is the design of the present work. The public is to decide how worthy of his subject the Author has accomplished his task. The time, the labour, and the expense of collecting and arranging the materials have been so enormous, to a person in his circumstances, that, had he foreseen them, it is doubtful whether he could have mustered courage to undertake the work. However, he has now the satisfaction of offering to the public the fruit of hard and expensive labour, and not what has cost him nothing. It has been the Author's aim throughout to give a fair statement of facts, and to leave those facts to speak for themselves, without interspersing among them long dissertations of his own. Firmly attached, as he is, to his own creed, he has written this volume under the impression that it is not within the province of an historian to criticise the creeds of other people. Book Description
Excerpt from English Nonconformity The Exodus of nearly two thousand ministers from their cures in the Church of England, as an act of fidelity to conscience in 1662, was an event fraught with weighty lessons to the Christian, and which should not be with out interest to the Philosopher and the Statesman. In the autumn of last year the Committee of the Congregational Union of England and Wales resolved to convene an assembly of pastors and delegates from the different parts of the kingdom, to deliberate on what should be done in commemoration of that event. One decision of that assembly was, that a volume should be issued on that chapter in our national history, considered in its relation to our earlier ecclesiastical annals, and to our modern Nonconformity. The present publication owes its origin to that decision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Leaves From the History of Welsh Nonconformity in the Seventeenth Century

Leaves From the History of Welsh Nonconformity in the Seventeenth Century PDF Author: John E. Southall

ISBN: 9781331036203
Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 188

Book Description
Excerpt from Leaves From the History of Welsh Nonconformity in the Seventeenth Century: Being Chiefly the Autobiography of Richard Davies of Welshpool Quaker (1636-1708) The accompanying Autobiography has been in the main a reprint of the sixth English edition of 1825; the notes are almost wholly fresh matter, and some explanatory paragraphs are interspersed in the text. These may be recognised by the distance between the lines being slightly wider. In 1840, a Welsh edition was issued with the following title: "Hanes arghoeddiad, traifferthion gwasanaeth a theithiau yr hen was hwnw o eiddo yr Arglwydd, Richard Davies, yn cynnwys peth hanes am daeniad y gwirionedd yn Ngogledd Cymru wedi ei gyfieithu o'rchweched argraffiad yn Saesoneg." The few remaining copies of the edition were given away by the Recording Clerk of the modern Society of Friends about 1893, so that it is not now. in print. I may say, that, in issuing an eighth edition (the seventh English edition appeared in 1840) I have not sought to simply present an interesting piece of literature for the antiquarian. The importance of the subject matter lies in a different direction, yet I cannot expect the work to be fully valued by the general public on those grounds. It is only those who share Richard Davies religious convictions, and who would have to act to-day as he acted were they in similar circumstances, who will appreciate to the full the beauty and consistency of the worship, life and conversation he was concerned to promote both by example and word of mouth.
