Book Description
Excerpt from Non-Partisan Temperance Effort: Defined, Advocated, and Vindicated During about two months these thoughts were gradually taking form, resulting in the organization of this National League, on a strictly non-partisan basis. Non-partisan seemed to be the talismanic term which would inspire confidence, attract support, and crystallize effort. Responses from all over the country concentrated upon this point. A considerable number of Democrats, a few persons who voted with the Third Party, and many Republicans, were among the favorable respondents. January I, 188 5, the League was organized. Its non partisanship was recognized in its list of officers, which includes, 10 Democrats, several who voted the Third Party ticket last autumn. The Politics of Prohibition

The Politics of Prohibition PDF Author: Lisa M. F. Andersen
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107434432
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
This book introduces the intrepid temperance advocates who formed America's longest-living minor political party - the Prohibition Party - drawing on the party's history to illuminate how American politics came to exclude minor parties from governance. Lisa M. F. Andersen traces the influence of pressure groups and ballot reforms, arguing that these innovations created a threshold for organization and maintenance that required extraordinary financial and personal resources from parties already lacking in both. More than most other minor parties, the Prohibition Party resisted an encroaching Democratic-Republican stranglehold over governance. When Prohibitionists found themselves excluded from elections, they devised a variety of tactics: they occupied saloons, pressed lawsuits, forged utopian communities, and organized dry consumers to solicit alcohol-free products.

Book Description
A comprehensive encyclopedia on all aspects of the production, consumption, and social impact of alcohol. Alcohol and Temperance in Modern History: An International Encyclopedia spans the history of alcohol production and consumption from the development of distilled spirits and modern manufacturing and distribution methods to the present. Authoritative and unbiased, it brings together the work of hundreds of experts from a variety of disciplines with an emphasis on the extraordinary wealth of scholarship developed in the past several decades. Its nearly 500 alphabetically organized entries range beyond the principal alcoholic beverages and major producers and retailers to explore attitudes toward alcohol in various countries and religions, traditional drinking occasions and rituals, and images of drinking and temperance in art, painting, literature, and drama. Other entries describe international treaties and organizations related to alcohol production and distribution, global consumption patterns, and research and treatment institutions, as well as temperance, prohibition, and antiprohibitionist efforts worldwide.
