Progress in Nitrogen Cycling Studies

Progress in Nitrogen Cycling Studies PDF Author: O. van Cleemput
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401154503
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 666

Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of the `8th Nitrogen Workshop' which was held at the University of Ghent, Belgium, from 5 to 8 September 1994. Although nitrogen dynamics in different ecosystems have been studied for several decades, new orientations and other emphases have recently emerged. Previously, nitrogen was considered as an essential element mostly in terms of productivity, but now, more emphasis is attached to environmental consequences. More than 100 contributions in this book tackle recent developments within the fields of nitrogen advice systems, plant response to fertilization, immobilization and mobilization, nitrification, denitrification, leaching, ammonia volatilization and biological nitrogen fixation. A large number of papers is devoted to the formation of gaseous nitrogen compounds, while mineralization-immobilization is another topic of important interest. The book also contains the reports of discussion groups on different aspects of the nitrogen cycle.

The Practical Handbook of Compost Engineering

The Practical Handbook of Compost Engineering PDF Author: Roger Tim Haug
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780873713733
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 746

Book Description
The Practical Handbook of Compost Engineering presents an in-depth examination of the principles and practice of modern day composting. This comprehensive book covers compost science, engineering design, operation, principles, and practice, stressing a fundamental approach to analysis throughout. Biological, physical, chemical, thermodynamic, and kinetic principles are covered to develop a unified analytical approach to analysis and an understanding of the process. A brief history of the development of composting systems, which leads to descriptions of modern processes, is presented. The Practical Handbook of Compost Engineering also discusses the elements of successful odor management at composting facilities, including state-of-the-art odor treatment and enhanced atmospheric dispersion. The book is excellent for all engineers, practitioners, plant operators, scientists, researchers, and students in the field.

Advances in Integrated Soil Fertility Management in sub-Saharan Africa: Challenges and Opportunities

Advances in Integrated Soil Fertility Management in sub-Saharan Africa: Challenges and Opportunities PDF Author: Andre Bationo
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789402404715
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1091

Book Description
Food insecurity is a fundamental challenge to human welfare and economic growth in Africa. Low agricultural production leads to low incomes, poor nutrition, vulnerability to risk and threat and lack of empowerment. This book offers a comprehensive synthesis of agricultural research and development experiences from sub-Saharan Africa. The text highlights practical lessons from the sub-Saharan Africa region.

The California Nitrogen Assessment

The California Nitrogen Assessment PDF Author: Thomas P. Tomich
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520962230
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
Nitrogen is indispensable to all life on Earth. However, humans now dominate the nitrogen cycle, and nitrogen emissions from human activity have real costs: water and air pollution, climate change, and detrimental effects on human health, biodiversity, and natural habitats. Too little nitrogen limits ecosystem processes, while too much nitrogen transforms ecosystems profoundly. The California Nitrogen Assessment is the first comprehensive account of nitrogen flows, practices, and policies for California, encompassing all nitrogen flows—not just those associated with agriculture—and their impacts on ecosystem services and human wellbeing. How California handles nitrogen issues will be of interest nationally and internationally, and the goal of the assessment is to link science with action and to produce information that affects both future policy and solutions for addressing nitrogen pollution. This book also provides a model for application of integrated ecosystem assessment methods at regional and state (subnational) levels.

Microbiology of Composting

Microbiology of Composting PDF Author: Heribert Insam
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540675686
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 658

Book Description
Composting is increasingly used as a recycling technology for organic wastes. Knowledge on the composition and activities of compost microbial communities has so far been based on traditional methods. New molecular and physiological tools now offer new insights into the "black box" of decaying material. An unforeseen diversity of microorganisms are involved in composting, opening up an enormous potential for future process and product improvements. In this book, the views of scientists, engineers and end-users on compost production, process optimisation, standardisation and product application are presented.
