The Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge is known for many things: its abundant and varied wildlife, the long and complex story of the Nisqually River delta and its role as a portion of the traditional homelands of the Nisqually people, and for the refuge's modern-day role as a distraction from the vagaries of every-day urban and suburban life for residents of Washington State and beyond.Nisqually Typologies focuses entirely on the environment in its present state, and I have made a concerted effort to showcase the unique natural systems that comprise the refuge as they adapt to each season, with no judgments being made about the historical or current usage of the refuge lands, or the complex role that the refuge and its assorted issues play in local or regional political thinking.Very specific things were photographed - environmental features that make Nisqually truly unique and important - while also consciously avoiding photographing the people visiting and the wildlife transiting the refuge. This book focuses on permanent features that make the refuge timeless and important, the non-transitory (but always changing) things on the refuge that, in some form or fashion, have been and will continue to be there forever.The groundwork and research for project began in early 2021, when I began visiting the refuge every few weeks explore the environment and start formulating my approach to documenting the widely varied landscapes and ecological systems. After much research, many miles of wandering, and a series of test prints, the real work began. In January 2022 I began visiting the refuge on a consistent and planned basis, documenting the facets of the environment that I found most interesting and representative of the space as they went through their seasonal metamorphosis.All photographs in this book were taken during their respective month in the year 2022. They were all processed identically and nothing was added or removed from any of the images. Some images had minor cropping or leveling applied during processing. Each of these photographs represents, to the best of my ability, exactly what each scene looked like in-person.

The syllable has always been a key concept in generative linguistics: the rules, representations, parameters, or constraints posited in diverse frameworks of theoretical phonology and morphology all make reference to this fundamental unit of prosodic structure. No less central to the field is Optimality Theory, an approach developed within (morpho-)phonology in the early 1990s. This 2003 book combines two themes of central importance to linguists and their mutual relevance in recent research. It provides an overview of the role of the syllable in OT and ways in which problems that relate to the analysis of syllable structure can be solved in OT. The contributions to the book not only show that the syllable sheds light on certain properties of OT itself, they also demonstrate that OT is capable of describing and adequately analyzing many issues that are problematic in other theories. This book presents the main outcomes of the first European research project on the seismic behavior of adjustable steel storage pallet racking systems. In particular, it describes a comprehensive and unique set of full-scale tests designed to assess such behavior. The tests performed include cyclic tests of full-scale rack components, namely beam-to-upright connections and column base connections; static and dynamic tests to assess the friction factor between pallets and rack beams; full-scale pushover and pseudodynamic tests of storage racks in down-aisle and cross-aisle directions; and full-scale dynamic tests on two-bay, three-level rack models. The implications of the findings of this extensive testing regime on the seismic behavior of racking systems are discussed in detail, highlighting e.g. the confirmation that under severe dynamic conditions “sliding” is the main factor influencing rack response. This work was conceived during the development of the SEISRACKS project. Its outcomes will contribute significantly to increasing our knowledge of the structural behavior of racks under earthquake conditions and should inform future rack design.
