Assessing the Value and Cost of Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT)

Assessing the Value and Cost of Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT) PDF Author: Evaldo Favi
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832550878
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 99

Book Description
The complexity in analyzing the Health Economics of Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT) reflects the variety of specialties involved in the maintenance and development of the service. Commonly, ODT relies on different funding sources. Financing the three main phases of the service (Organ Donation, Retrieval and Transplantation), these are often compartmentalized and independent. Furthermore, the value of the service is rarely analyzed against the social and treatment costs for the management of patients with End Stage Organ Failure (ESOF). Defining a Value-Based ODT service represents a major challenge, while hundreds of thousands of patients with ESOF globally, hope to receive an organ transplant as life-saving or life-prolonging treatment. The “value” itself may not be limited to cost-benefit analysis but it should include social aspects of care, influencing the overall quality and performances of ODT to benefit patients, their families and more broadly our society.

Head First

Head First PDF Author: Alastair Santhouse
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0593538463
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
Now in paperback. In the tradition of Lori Gottlieb and Henry Marsh, a distinguished psychiatrist examines his own practice. Alastair Santhouse knew something was wrong the night he was on call during his medical training and got the news that a woman on the way to the ER had died in the ambulance. That meant he could go back to sleep! But he couldn't. He was overtaken with the sense that his joyful reaction was terrible failure. That night began his long journey away from the ER and into psychiatry. Head First chronicles Santhouse's many years treating patients and his exploration of the ways in which our minds exert a huge and underappreciated influence over our health. They shape our responses to symptoms that we develop, dictate the treatments we receive, and influence whether they work. They even influence whether we develop symptoms at all. Written with brutal honesty, deep compassion, and a wry sense of humor, Head First examines difficult cases that illuminate some of our most puzzling and controversial medical issues--from the tragedy of suicide, to the stigma surrounding obesity, to the mysteries of self-induced illness. Ultimately he finds that our medical model has failed us by promoting specialization and overlooking perhaps the single most important component of our health: our state of mind.

Regenerating Bodies

Regenerating Bodies PDF Author: Julie Kent
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136596240
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
This exciting book examines how human tissues and cells are being exchanged, commodified and commercialized by new health technologies. Through a discussion of emergent global ‘tissue economies’ the author explores the social dynamics of innovation in the fields of tissue engineering and stem cell science. The book explores how regenerative medicine configures and conceptualizes bodies and argues that the development of regenerative medicine is a feminist issue. In Regenerating Bodies, Kent critically examines the transformative potential of regenerative medicine and whether it represents a paradigm shift from more traditional forms of biomedicine. The book shows that users of these technologies are gendered and women’s bodies are enrolled in the production of them in particular ways. So what is the value of a feminist bioethics for thinking about the ethical issues at stake? Drawing on extensive qualitative field research, Kent examines the issues around donation, procurement, banking and engineering of human tissues, and presents an analysis of the regulatory and policy debates surrounding these practices within Europe and the UK. The book considers the claims that regenerative medicine represents exciting possibilities for treating the diseases of ageing bodies, critically assessing what kind of futures are embodied in tissue and cell based therapies. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars and students within the social sciences, in health technology studies, bioethics, feminist studies, and gender and health studies.

Caring for our future

Caring for our future PDF Author: Great Britain: Department of Health
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 9780101837828
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
Care and support affects a large number of people: eight out of 10 people aged 65 will need some care and support in their later years; some people have impairments from birth or develop them during their working life; some 5 million people care for a friend or relative, some for more than 50 hours a week. The current system does not offer enough support until a crisis point is reached, the quality of care is variable and inconsistent, and the growing and ageing population is only going to increase the pressure. Consequently, two core principles lie at the heart of this White Paper. The first is that individuals, communities and Government should do everything possible to prevent, postpone and minimise people's need for formal care and support. The system should be built around the promotion of people's independence and well-being. The second principle is that people should be in control of their own care and support, with personal budgets and direct payments, backed by clear, comparable information and advice that will allow individuals and their carers to make the choices that are right for them. This paper sets out the principles and approach, with sections covering: strengthening support within communities; housing; better information and advice; assessment, eligibility and portability for people who use care services; carers' support; defining high-quality care; improving quality; keeping people safe; a better local care market; workforce; personalised care and support; integration and joined-up care.
