Much of the correspondence here reflects the financial difficulties that the Company encountered as a balance between labouring emigrants and those of the upper classes was not achieved. There are also letters of application to emigrate to the Australasian colonies enquiring into ship departures and accommodation. Other letters seek information relative to the welfare and whereabouts of family members having emigrated to the colonies in previous years. There are also several letters referring to the transfer of land titles, passage funds and company shares in addition to those discussing the expanding agricultural industry. Passenger lists and an array of information relative to the 'Louisa Campbell' ship are also enclosed. Copies of London newspapers from this time also feature at the end of this item and refer to "the division of new Zealand provinces" and legislation passed to financially assist the New Zealand Company "to make further provision for the Government of the New Zealand Islands."

Book Description
Description: Letters mainly relaying applications made to emigrate to colonies in New Zealand, as well as embarkation orders to the directors of the New Zealand Company. Some of the initial letters discuss the introduction and cultivation of tobacco in New Zealand with "the view of making it an article of export". Many letters here also refer to land orders and sales of allotments in New Zealand settlements such as Nelson. Some letters advise against allowing certain passengers to make the journey, owing to illness and impending confinement prior to childbirth. Other letters refer directly to the payment of money to company share holders and several demonstrate attempts to contact news rooms and libraries throughout Britain in order to circulate advice literature about the colonies. There are also printed embarkation orders signed by company agent Joseph Phipson. There is a printed copy of an advert issued by the New Zealand Company for "Free Passage", listing all those eligible and the relative regulations. At the end of this item there is also a manuscript report listing and then describing in detail the character and culture of the indigenous populations in New Zealand.
