Description: Papers and correspondence refer to the New Plymouth transfer orders of tracts of land and applications to emigrate to colonies in New Zealand over those in Canada. There are letters sent enquiring whether titles of land purchased by emigrants on their arrival in New Zealand are guaranteed by the English government, and whether free passage is still being granted to labourers and mechanics. There are also several letters referring to reports and accounts of poor passenger conditions, insufficiency of water and bad treatment from the captain of emigrant vessel 'Ralph Bernal'. Other letters refer regularly to surveys, charts and maps made of Cooks Strait, Otago, and the publication of these. There are several letters referring to employment of medical staff and surgeons on board migrant vessels, with some asking the Company to grant a gratuity to all medical staff employed on future ships for cabin and living expenses. A list of "Specimens of Wood forwarded from New Zealand" is also enclosed amongst various letters discussing the colonial timber industry and decisions of timber brokers to use such wood for construction, particularly on railways. There is also a series of printed letters documenting approval of the "re-adjustment of the selection of Nelson lands", and copies of accommodation plans of the 'Ralph Bernal'. Much of the correspondence here reflects the financial difficulties that the Company encountered as a balance between labouring emigrants and those of the upper classes was not achieved. Other letters seek information relative to the welfare and whereabouts of family members having emigrated to the colonies in previous years. There are also several letters referring to the transfer of land titles, passage funds and company shares in addition to those discussing the expanding agricultural industry. Passenger lists and an array of information relative to the 'Louisa Campbell' ship are also enclosed. Copies of London newspapers from this time also feature at the end of this item and refer to "the division of new Zealand provinces" and legislation passed to financially assist the New Zealand Company "to make further provision for the Government of the New Zealand Islands."
