Probably the proper appellation was used by Wm. E. Barton who called the place Old (new) Salem, but common usage would never accept such a seeming incongruity, ' New Salem was the village that stood about ten years, then disappeared. Later the name Old Salem came to be used naturally and by common consent to designate the site of the old vil lage and vicinity. It has been known by this name for al most ninety years, extending between the two periods - the disappearing and the restoring of the village.
