Book Description
A Buddhist Lama and intersectional thought leader shares a guide for those who would dream a more just, ethical world into being. Saints, spiritual warriors, bodhisattvas, tzaddikim—no matter how they are named in a given tradition, they all share a profound wish to free others from suffering. Saints are not unattainable beings of stained glass or carved stone. “Saints are ordinary and human, doing things any person can learn to do,” teaches Lama Rod Owens. “Our era calls for saints who are from this time and place, speak the language of this moment, and integrate both social and spiritual liberation. I believe we all can and must become New Saints.” With The New Saints, Lama Rod shares a guidebook for becoming an effective agent of justice, peace, and change. Combining personal stories, traditional teachings, and instructions for contemplative and somatic practices, he shares inspiring resources for self-exploration and wise action. Each chapter reinforces the truth of our interdependency—allowing us to be of service to the collective well-being, access the unseen realms of divine guidance and strength, and call on the support of the countless beings who share our struggles and hopes. The status quo of our society is crumbling, and rightly so. But what future will emerge to replace it? “There’s nothing like crisis to wake us up and force us to get serious about change,” says Lama Rod. “Ancient, powerful magic is returning. With the end of the lies of the old world comes the awakening of truth.” For those who have the willingness to allow our hearts to break, disrupt systems of violence, and let deep, authentic care guide our actions instead of fear and hate, here is a clarion call for becoming a spiritual warrior—a human refreshed, serving a vision of a world shaped by love.

New Saints

New Saints PDF Author: Rev. Dr. Abel Manoukian
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 3734781256
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 82

Book Description
The present volume introduces the development of Canonization in the Armenian Church Tradition and professes strongly to canonize the Armenian Martyrs on the eve of the 100th Anniversary of 1915 Genocide Commemoration. How will this joint canonization be conveyed with regards to the massive number of genocide victims? Will it be done through individualization or by the following decree: "All those who died for their Christian faith." It is important for the Armenian Church to take the latter approach, for it is only God who knows, as He is the one who sanctifies either a person or a collective, for their sacrifice and testimony of faith. Of course, it would have been better if our Church had, many years ago, taken the necessary steps of enlightening our people as to why we needed to sanctify our martyrs, why their canonization is valuable to us now and to future generations as well. Let this booklet be a small offering in fulfilling what this prospect essentially lacks.

New Saints in Late-Mediaeval Venice, 1200–1500

New Saints in Late-Mediaeval Venice, 1200–1500 PDF Author: Karen E. McCluskey
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351103555
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
This book focuses on the comparatively unknown cults of new saints in late-mediaeval Venice. These new saints were near-contemporary citizens who were venerated by their compatriots without official sanction from the papacy. In doing so, the book uncovers a sub-culture of religious expression that has been overlooked in previous scholarship. The study highlights a myriad of hagiographical materials, both visual and textual, created to honour these new saints by members of four different Venetian communities: The Republican government; the monastic orders, mostly Benedictine; the mendicant orders; and local parishes. By scrutinising the hagiographic portraits described in painted vita panels, written vitae, passiones, votive images, sermons and sepulchre monuments, as well as archival and historical resources, the book identifies a specifically Venetian typology of sanctity tied to the idiosyncrasies of the city’s site and history. By focusing explicitly on local typological traits, the book produces an intimate and complex portrait of Venetian society and offers a framework for exploring the lived religious experience of late-mediaeval societies beyond the lagoon. As a result, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Venice, lived religion, hagiography, mediaeval history and visual culture.

New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church: Blesseds and saints canonized by Pope John Paul II during the years 1979-1983 PDF Author: Ferdinand Holböck
Publisher: Ignatius Press
ISBN: 9780898707540
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
In this volume a master of hagiography presents thirty seven new Blesseds and five Saints beatified and canonized by Pope John Paul II. These are new faces, some of them our contemporaries, who followed Christ under circumstances that were completely different from those of the saints of earlier ages who had the privilege of living in a world that was still more or less whole. The short biographies each include an illustration of the saint, and part of the homily given by the Pope at the canonization or beatification. In this book you will meet men and women who come from eras of great conflict, who in a heroic way remained faithful to Christ and to His Church, and so have become, as Vatican II says, "companions of our human condition". When the prophet Elijah on his forty-day journey to Mount Horeb collapsed in exhaustion, an angel came to him and strengthened him. The Saints have the power and the duty to help us, to set us aright and teach us strategy for our battle with the powers of darkness. Let us get to know them, so that we can call on them by name.

Angels & Saints

Angels & Saints PDF Author: Eliot Weinberger
Publisher: New Directions Publishing
ISBN: 0811229874
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
A gorgeously illustrated co-publication with Christine Burgin by “one of the world’s great essayists” (The New York Times). With a guide to the illustrations by Mary Wellesley. Angels have soared through Western culture and consciousness from Biblical to contemporary times. But what do we really know about these celestial beings? Where do they come from, what are they made of, how do they communicate and perceive? The celebrated essayist Eliot Weinberger has mined and deconstructed, resurrected and distilled centuries of theology into an awe-inspiring exploration of the heavenly host. From a litany of angelic voices, Weinberger’s lyrical meditation then turns to the earthly counterparts, the saints, their lives retold in a series of vibrant and playful capsule biographies, followed by a glimpse of the afterlife. Threaded throughout Angels & Saints are the glorious illuminated grid poems by the eighteenth-century Benedictine monk Hrabanus Maurus. These astonishingly complex, proto-“concrete” poems are untangled in a lucid afterword by the medieval scholar and historian Mary Wellesley.

Love and Rage

Love and Rage PDF Author: Lama Rod Owens
Publisher: North Atlantic Books
ISBN: 1623174090
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
A LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER In the face of systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence, how can we metabolize our anger into a force for liberation? White supremacy in the United States has long necessitated that Black rage be suppressed, repressed, or denied, often as a means of survival, a literal matter of life and death. In Love and Rage, Lama Rod Owens, coauthor of Radical Dharma, shows how this unmetabolized anger--and the grief, hurt, and transhistorical trauma beneath it--needs to be explored, respected, and fully embodied to heal from heartbreak and walk the path of liberation. This is not a book about bypassing anger to focus on happiness, or a road map for using spirituality to transform the nature of rage into something else. Instead, it is one that offers a potent vision of anger that acknowledges and honors its power as a vehicle for radical social change and enduring spiritual transformation. Love and Rage weaves the inimitable wisdom and lived experience of Lama Rod Owens with Buddhist philosophy, practical meditation exercises, mindfulness, tantra, pranayama, ancestor practices, energy work, and classical yoga. The result is a book that serves as both a balm and a blueprint for those seeking justice who can feel overwhelmed with anger--and yet who refuse to relent. It is a necessary text for these times.
