New Perspectives on Welsh Industrial History

New Perspectives on Welsh Industrial History PDF Author: Louise Miskell
Publisher: University of Wales Press
ISBN: 1786835010
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
This volume tells a story of Welsh industrial history different from the one traditionally dominated by the coal and iron communities of Victorian and Edwardian Wales. Extending the chronological scope from the early eighteenth- to the late twentieth-century, and encompassing a wider range of industries, the contributors combine studies of the internal organisation of workplace and production with outward-facing perspectives of Welsh industry in the context of the global economy. The volume offers important new insights into the companies, the employers, the markets and the money behind some of the key sectors of the Welsh economy – from coal to copper, and from steel to manufacturing – and challenges us to reconsider what we think of as constituting ‘industry’ in Wales.

Benefits, Costs, and Cycles in Workers’ Compensation

Benefits, Costs, and Cycles in Workers’ Compensation PDF Author: Philip S. Borba
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400921799
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
Workers' compensation insurance presents a set of institutional charac teristics that are unique. For every other form of insurance, both the insurer and the coverage provided under the policy are completely controlled either by the federal or a state government, or by an arrangement between the insured and a property-casualty insurer. Unemployment insurance, Social Security, and bank-deposit insurance are examples for which a legis lative body sets the benefits. and a government agency prescribes the in surance premium. By contrast, the coverage and premiums for automobile, homeowners, and fire insurance are individual contractual arrangements between a policyholder and one of the more than 1800 U. S. property casualty insurance companies. Workers' compensation insurance, however, is a hybrid in which state legislatures stipulate the terms of coverage, while regulated competition is the major determinant of prices. State legislatures enact statutes that prescribe the replacement rate and duration of indemnity benefits, as well as full reimbursement of medical expenses. And although the manual rates for workers' compensation insurance continue to be administered by a prior approval process in most states, the competitive-market price for coverage is achieved through a variety of price-modification plans (Appel and Borba, 1988).

A New Perspective on Human Mobility in the South

A New Perspective on Human Mobility in the South PDF Author: Rudolf Anich
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 940179023X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
This book offers innovative insights on South–South human mobility. It features a collection of papers that highlight often overlooked mobility patterns among and within regions in the global South as well as address critical realities faced by South-South migrants. This publication thoroughly investigates key issues of the migration debate, spanning from the terminological and contextual meaning of migration and development. It also critically examines some of the key features that human mobility in the global South is characterized by, including the prevalence of intra-regional and labor mobility, the role of diasporas communities in developing countries, South-South remittances patterns, the influence of environmental factors on the decision to migrate and the rising number of child migrants. By carefully moving the lens from the frequently examined South–North and North–North movements to human mobility within the Southern regions of the world, this book questions the traditional conception of the migration paradigm. It offers knowledge and insights that will help to expand the debate as well as stimulate further research on this important topic and, hopefully, promote future activities aimed at the protection of migrants and their families living in the South. As a result, it is an ideal resource for migration scholars, policy-makers and development practitioners.

Regulation Versus Litigation

Regulation Versus Litigation PDF Author: Daniel P. Kessler
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226432181
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
The efficacy of various political institutions is the subject of intense debate between proponents of broad legislative standards enforced through litigation and those who prefer regulation by administrative agencies. This book explores the trade-offs between litigation and regulation, the circumstances in which one approach may outperform the other, and the principles that affect the choice between addressing particular economic activities with one system or the other. Combining theoretical analysis with empirical investigation in a range of industries, including public health, financial markets, medical care, and workplace safety, Regulation versus Litigation sheds light on the costs and benefits of two important instruments of economic policy.

STOP HARMFUL SURGERY. BACK PAIN: A NEW APPROACH AT LAST

STOP HARMFUL SURGERY. BACK PAIN: A NEW APPROACH AT LAST PDF Author: Paul Hemenway Altrocchi, MD
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1462810926
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
Dr. Altrocchi, a low back pain MD-expert, directs his book to the 250 million people who have had, now have or will have lumbar back pain. The traditional MD-approach emphasizing “herniated discs,” “pinched nerves” and surgery, has failed for 75 years, causing widespread chronic back pain, disability and human tragedy. In fact, over 90% of back pain is caused by mechanical spine problems, easily diagnosed and treated by logical, anatomical hands-on methods, clearly explained by Dr. Altrocchi, a former Professor of Neurology at Stanford Medical School with 40 years of clinical experience. If patients are seen immediately, they can be cured promptly by simple, logical, non-painful manual treatment without expensive, misleading scans which too often lead to useless and harmful surgery.
