Book Description
The primary goal of the Large Hadron Collider is to investigate the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for new physics at the energy scale of Tera electron Volt. For a successful analysis of the vast amount of data, precise predictions for the processes within the Standard Model of elementary particles and its possible extensions are crucial. One of the main tools in collider physics to make rigorous quantitative predictions is perturbation theory, an expansion of the hard scattering matrix elements in the coupling constants of the quantum fields. Traditionally, observables in perturbation theory are computed evaluating Feynman diagrams. While the available techniques for tree-level diagrams are very well developed and to a large extent automated, the inclusionof quantum corrections at one-loop order represents a severe bottleneck for processes with many particles in the final state: One the one hand, this is due to the very large number of Feynman diagrams for high multiplicity processes. On the other hand, the computation of an individual one-loop Feynman diagram on its own is a non-trivial task due to the complicated integration over the virtual degrees of freedom. In this book, alternative methods based on unitarity and integrand reduction to calculate one-loop amplitudes in massless Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are presented. The basic ingredient is to construct the entire one-loop integrand from products of on-shell tree-level amplitudes. With algebraic techniques at the integrand level the full one-loop amplitude can then be constructed. This approach circumvents the explicit evaluation of individual one-loop Feynman diagrams. The described algorithm is carefully investigated with respect to numerical accuracy and runtime performance. As a proof of concept for the new methods, the phenomenologically interesting process of four-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider is computed.

Precise Predictions for W + 3 Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

Precise Predictions for W + 3 Jet Production at Hadron Colliders PDF Author:

Book Description
We report on the first next-to-leading order QCD computation of W + 3-jet production in hadronic collisions including all partonic subprocesses. We compare the results with CDF data from the Tevatron, and find excellent agreement. The renormalization and factorization scale dependence is reduced substantially compared to leading-order calculations. The required one-loop matrix elements are computed using on-shell methods, implemented in a numerical program, BlackHat. We use the SHERPA package to generate the real-emission contributions and to integrate the various contributions over phase space. We use a leading-color (large-N{sub c}) approximation for the virtual part, which we confirm in W + 1,2-jet production to be valid to within three percent. The present calculation demonstrates the utility of on-shell methods for computing next-to-leading-order corrections to processes important to physics analyses at the Large Hadron Collider.

LHC Phenomenology

LHC Phenomenology PDF Author: Einan Gardi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319053620
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
This book covers a very broad spectrum of experimental and theoretical activity in particle physics, from the searches for the Higgs boson and physics beyond the Standard Model, to detailed studies of Quantum Chromodynamics, the B-physics sectors and the properties of hadronic matter at high energy density as realised in heavy-ion collisions. Starting with a basic introduction to the Standard Model and its most likely extensions, the opening section of the book presents an overview of the theoretical and phenomenological framework of hadron collisions and current theoretical models of frontier physics. In part II, discussion of the theory is supplemented by chapters on the detector capabilities and search strategies, as well as an overview of the main detector components, the initial calibration procedures and physics samples and early LHC results. Part III completes the volume with a description of the physics behind Monte Carlo event generators and a broad introduction to the main statistical methods used in high energy physics. LHC Phenomenology covers all of these topics at a pedagogical level, with the aim of providing young particle physicists with the basic tools required for future work on the various LHC experiments. It will also serve as a useful reference text for those working in the field.

Searches for Dijet Resonances

Searches for Dijet Resonances PDF Author: Lydia Audrey Beresford
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 331997520X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
This book addresses one of the most intriguing mysteries of our universe: the nature of dark matter. The results presented here mark a significant and substantial contribution to the search for new physics, in particular for new particles that couple to dark matter. The first analysis presented is a search for heavy new particles that decay into pairs of hadronic jets (dijets). This pioneering analysis explores unprecedented dijet invariant masses, reaching nearly 7 TeV, and sets constraints on several important new physics models. The two subsequent analyses focus on the difficult low dijet mass region, down to 200 GeV, and employ a novel technique to efficiently gather low-mass dijet events. The results of these analyses transcend the long-standing constraints on dark matter mediator particles set by several existing experiments.

Book Description
In this thesis we discuss the problem of evaluation of tensor integrals appearing in a typical one-loop Feynman diagram calculation. After a brief introduction into subject we demonstrate the deficiencies of standard algorithms and discuss possible solutions. In the following chapters an approach based on the extended basis of integrals in higher dimensions is carefully explained. We continue with the implementation of described algorithms in a computer library for the numerical evaluation of tensor integrals, its cross-checks and accuracy tests. Finally, as an example application of these methods we show a calculation of the one-loop virtual corrections to the muon pair production with hard photon emission. And conclude by presenting numerical results for differential cross sections with kinematics of the KLOE and BaBar detectors.
