The New Low-Maintenance Garden

The New Low-Maintenance Garden PDF Author: Valerie Easton
Publisher: Timber Press
ISBN: 1604691360
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
Do you ever lament that you'd love to be able to garden more, but just don't have the time? The demanding pace of modern life leaves little space for the pleasures of gardening. On the other hand, gardening itself could be the culprit: elaborate, traditional perennial borders; water-hungry or disease-prone plants; needy lawns; and high-maintenance plants that require staking or clipping all suck up precious hours. Simply put, we need to start gardening in a whole new way. In this inspiring book, Val Easton shows exactly how to have a low-maintenance garden that doesn't sacrifice style. You won't have to give up your favorite plants or settle for expanses of ugly bark nuggets. You just have to unlearn some bad old habits and pick up some good new ones. So, how do you go about making a "new" low-maintenance garden? First, design your garden with maintenance in mind—good-looking hardscape will both save weeding time and showcase your favorite plants. Second, simplify your garden routines—learn the most efficient planting and maintenance techniques and don't get stressed if everything isn't letter-perfect. Third, learn how to work with nature rather than against it. And finally, embrace home-grown fruits, herbs, and vegetables; well planted containers; and thoughtfully chosen plants. The New Low-Maintenance Garden doesn't just tell you how to garden in a whole new way—it shows you, through profiles and beautiful photographs of real gardens that embody low-maintenance techniques. The pressures of life are not likely to ease up anytime soon, but the lessons of this timely book will help you banish guilt over undone garden chores and revel in your garden successes.

Low-carbon City and New-type Urbanization

Low-carbon City and New-type Urbanization PDF Author: Songlin Feng
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662459698
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 397

Book Description
In the face of increasingly serious resource and environmental challenges, the world has already accepted low-carbon development as the main way forward for future city construction. Chinese cities have encountered many problems during their development, including land constraints, energy shortages, traffic congestion and air pollution. For this reason, the national meeting of the Central Work Conference on Urbanization made the strategic decision to take a new approach to urbanization and indicated that in future the key features of urbanization in China will be low-carbon development and harmony between the environment and resources. This book discusses the "low-carbon city" as the new pattern of Chinese urbanization. This represents a major change and takes "intensive land use,” “intelligent,” “green” and “low carbon" as its key words. Low carbon will become an important future development direction for Chinese urbanization development. In the twenty-first Century in response to the global climate change, countries have started a wave of low-carbon city construction. But in China, there are still many disputes and misunderstandings surrounding the issue. Due to a lack of research, low-carbon city construction in China is still in the early stages, and while there have been successes, there have also been failures. There are complex and diverse challenges in applying low-carbon development methods in the context of today’s Chinese cities. The construction of low-carbon cities requires efficient government, the technological innovation of enterprises, and professional scholars, but also efforts on the part of the public to change their daily activities. Based on the above considerations, the collection brings together experts from urban planning and design, clean-energy systems, low-carbon transportation, new types of city infrastructure and smart cities etc., in the hope of forming some solutions for Chinese low-carbon city development.

New Light on Dark Stars

New Light on Dark Stars PDF Author: Neill I. Reid
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447136632
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 492

Book Description
Perhaps the most common question that a child asks when he or she sees the night sky from a dark site for the first time is: 'How many stars are there?' This happens to be a question which has exercised the intellectual skills of many astronomers over the course of most of the last century, including, for the last two decades, one of the authors of this text. Until recently, the most accurate answer was 'We are not certain, but there is a good chance that almost all of them are M dwarfs. ' Within the last three years, results from new sky-surveys - particularly the first deep surveys at near infrared wavelengths - have provided a breakthrough in this subject, solidifying our census of the lowest-mass stars and identifying large numbers of the hitherto almost mythical substellar-mass brown dwarfs. These extremely low-luminosity objects are the central subjects of this book, and the subtitle should be interpreted accordingly. The expression 'low-mass stars' carries a wide range of meanings in the astronomical literature, but is most frequently taken to refer to objects with masses comparable with that of the Sun - F and G dwarfs, and their red giant descendants. While this definition is eminently reasonable for the average extragalactic astronomer, our discussion centres on M dwarfs, with masses of no more than 60% that of the Sun, and extends to 'failed stars' - objects with insufficient mass to ignite central hydrogen fusion.

Category : Health & Fitness

Pages : 414

Book Description
Low-carb diets work! Just look at the continued sales of the venerable Atkins diet and of the upstarts, Wheat Belly and Paleo. Even so, low-carb diets are hard to stick to and often unhealthy. Laura Lamont, a qualified nutritional therapist who introduced the UK to the revolutionary Shirataki Noodle, brings us a healthy new take on low-carb dieting. Lamont explains how eating a nutritionally sound combination of controlled amounts of complex carbohydrates, protein, and "good" fats (in foods such as avocados, salmon and flaxseed) at the right times of day can bring about healthy, long-lasting weight loss. Now there's no need to deprive yourself of any food group - and you don't even have to give up bread! Working with clients at her weight-loss clinic, she discovered that including protein and healthy fats in every meal helps to boost metabolism, stabilize blood sugar levels and curb cravings, leading to effective weight loss that could see you shedding at least a kilo a week. The book includes information on the nutritional science behind the diet, as well as practical charts to help you identify which foods you should be eating, and meal plans. There are more than 75 mouth-watering recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners - and even desserts! And each recipe comes with a nutritional analysis. Successfully tried and tested and drawing on the latest scientific research, The New Low-Carb Diet is the 21st-century way to eat well, lose weight and feel healthier than ever.

State of Empowerment

State of Empowerment PDF Author: Carolyn Barnes
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472126202
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
On weekday afternoons, dismissal bells signal not just the end of the school day but also the beginning of another important activity: the federally funded after-school programs that offer tutoring, homework help, and basic supervision to millions of American children. Nearly one in four low-income families enroll a child in an after-school program. Beyond sharpening students’ math and reading skills, these programs also have a profound impact on parents. In a surprising turn—especially given the long history of social policies that leave recipients feeling policed, distrusted, and alienated—government-funded after-school programs have quietly become powerful forces for political and civic engagement by shifting power away from bureaucrats and putting it back into the hands of parents. In State of Empowerment Carolyn Barnes uses ethnographic accounts of three organizations to reveal how interacting with government-funded after-school programs can enhance the civic and political lives of low-income citizens.
