Category : Brittle materials

Book Description
New formulae are presented to re-evaluate plain strain fracture toughness of brittle and ductile materials from previous works on chevron-notched specimens. The fracture toughness KIm from the new formulae agree with values of KIC from ASTM specimens. The KIm measurements are successful in tests of tough aluminum when the fracture toughness exceeds 40 MPa . m1 2 and steel 20G with the plasticity factor p approach 1. It is found that the valid specimen size could be smaller than 1.25(KIC/?S)2 for aluminum alloys, and even less than 0.1(KIC/?S) for steel 20G when the KIm formulae are used.

Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small- Size Chevron-Notched Specimens

Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small- Size Chevron-Notched Specimens PDF Author: Yevgeny Deryugin

Book Description
A new method is proposed to determine fracture toughness of structural materials according to the test data of non-standard small-size chevron-notched specimens. During the tests, loading diagrams and photographic images of the specimens taken in time intervals are obtained. The crack length is measured in the process of its initiation and propagation. The analytical expressions are obtained being based and derived from the constitutive equations of engineering fracture mechanics to determine the crack-driving force (specific fracture energy) and the stress intensity factor. The method allows us to exclude the periodic unloading of the specimen applied under standard test conditions to determine the change in specimen compliance, which is taken into account in constitutive equations at crack length increase. All necessary calculation parameters are determined according to the experimental data. The method allows us to certify fracture toughness of the material without restrictions regarding the amount of plastic deformation and in front of the crack tip and in the specimen as a whole. The examples are given to calculate the fracture toughness criteria for a number of structural materials characterized by the ability to plastic deformation and by the Young's modulus value.

An Investigation on the Method for Determination of Fracture Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials with Chevron-Notched Short-Rod and Short-Bar Specimens

An Investigation on the Method for Determination of Fracture Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials with Chevron-Notched Short-Rod and Short-Bar Specimens PDF Author: W. Chizhi

Pages : 12

Book Description
By means of an expression proposed by the authors, dimensionless critical crack lengths and stress-intensity factor coefficients for chevron-notched short-rod specimens were calculated based on the straight-through crack assumption. Calculation was also done for chevron-notched short-bar specimens in an extended range including short bar with rectangular cross section. Three configurations of chevron-notched specimens were used to test fracture toughness KIc for eight metallic materials. Some results were compared with values from standard compact tension and three-point bend specimens. Good agreement was obtained when both stable crack extension and a very small plasticity factor were achieved. The role of load-displacement plot is emphasized. A discussion about some specimen parameters such as dimensionless initial crack length and width to half height (or width to radius) ratio is given.

Using Chevron-Notch, Short-Bar Specimens for Measuring the Fracture Toughness of a Martensitic Stainless Steel at High Hardness

Using Chevron-Notch, Short-Bar Specimens for Measuring the Fracture Toughness of a Martensitic Stainless Steel at High Hardness PDF Author: FJ. Dolan
Publisher:

Category : Chevron-notch specimens
Languages : en
Pages : 13

Book Description
Fracture toughness tests were conducted at room temperature and at - 196°C on a martensitic stainless steel that had been quenched and tempered to a hardness of Rockwell C 61-63. The fracture toughness specimens were chevron-notch, short-bar specimens for which B was 12.7 mm and W was 25.4 mm. Tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM Test Method for Plane-Strain (Chevron Notch) Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 1304-89).

Performance of Chevron-Notch Short Bar Specimen in Determining the Fracture Toughness of Silicon Nitride and Aluminum Oxide

Performance of Chevron-Notch Short Bar Specimen in Determining the Fracture Toughness of Silicon Nitride and Aluminum Oxide PDF Author: D. Munz

Pages : 5

Book Description
Ease of preparation and testing are advantages unique to the chevron-notch specimen used for the determination of the plane strain fracture toughness of extremely brittle materials. During testing, a crack develops at the notch tip and extends stably as the load is increased. For a given specimen and notch configuration, maximum load always occurs at the same relative crack length independent of the material. Fracture toughness is determined from the maximum load with no need for crack length measurement. Chevron notch acuity is relatively unimportant since a crack is produced during specimen loading. In this paper, the authors use their previously determined stress intensity factor relationship for the chevron-notch short bar specimen to examine the performance of that specimen in determining the plane strain fracture toughness of silicon nitride and aluminum oxide.

Comparison of Analytical and Experimental Stress-Intensity Coefficients for Chevron V-Notched Three-Point Bend Specimens

Book Description
Chevron-notched specimens in a number of configurations have been recently used to determine plane-strain fracture toughness. Most researchers have employed tensile short-rod and short-bar specimens, while the three-point bend configuration has been used only to a limited extent despite its convenience for testing at ambient and high temperatures.
