These Technical Memoranda have been prepared in order to provide engineering relationships which can be used as part of the overall fire safety design of buildings with atria an other spaces where large numbers of people may be exposed to smoke, toxic atmospheres and hot gases. The need for smoke control depends on many aspects of the building design and use, including the combustibility of the contents, mobility of occupants, and ease of escape. The smoke control measures needed, if any, may be simple perhaps exploiting the normal ventilation system-or they may require extra equipment and controls. These considerations are taken in context in fire safety engineering design and are dealt with elsewhere(l). This publication is intended as a source document for design guidance. The relationships are based on published, authoritative information, where this is available, and the limits of applicability are suggested. In cases where the basis of a relationship is not firmly established, the relationship is given on the understanding that it may be superseded when further information is available. This is made clear in the text. It should normally be possible to use the information given here without resort to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or physical modelling, although these are valuable tools which can be used for unusual designs or to generate future design guidance. The basic principles involved in CFD and what is offered to the designer are described in Appendix 2. Background notes and sources for these Memoranda are given in Appendix 3. However, information on smoke generation and smoke control is increasing rapidly and new data can be used to augment the guidance given here.
