Categorical Homotopy Theory

Categorical Homotopy Theory PDF Author: Emily Riehl
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139952633
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 371

Book Description
This book develops abstract homotopy theory from the categorical perspective with a particular focus on examples. Part I discusses two competing perspectives by which one typically first encounters homotopy (co)limits: either as derived functors definable when the appropriate diagram categories admit a compatible model structure, or through particular formulae that give the right notion in certain examples. Emily Riehl unifies these seemingly rival perspectives and demonstrates that model structures on diagram categories are irrelevant. Homotopy (co)limits are explained to be a special case of weighted (co)limits, a foundational topic in enriched category theory. In Part II, Riehl further examines this topic, separating categorical arguments from homotopical ones. Part III treats the most ubiquitous axiomatic framework for homotopy theory - Quillen's model categories. Here, Riehl simplifies familiar model categorical lemmas and definitions by focusing on weak factorization systems. Part IV introduces quasi-categories and homotopy coherence.

Algebraic Topology: Applications and New Directions

Algebraic Topology: Applications and New Directions PDF Author: Ulrike Tillmann
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821894749
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the Stanford Symposium on Algebraic Topology: Applications and New Directions, held from July 23-27, 2012, at Stanford University, Stanford, California. The symposium was held in honor of Gunnar Carlsson, Ralph Cohen and Ib Madsen, who celebrated their 60th and 70th birthdays that year. It showcased current research in Algebraic Topology reflecting the celebrants' broad interests and profound influence on the subject. The topics varied broadly from stable equivariant homotopy theory to persistent homology and application in data analysis, covering topological aspects of quantum physics such as string topology and geometric quantization, examining homology stability in algebraic and geometric contexts, including algebraic -theory and the theory of operads.

New Directions in Paraconsistent Logic

New Directions in Paraconsistent Logic PDF Author: Jean-Yves Beziau
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 8132227190
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 542

Book Description
The present book discusses all aspects of paraconsistent logic, including the latest findings, and its various systems. It includes papers by leading international researchers, which address the subject in many different ways: development of abstract paraconsistent systems and new theorems about them; studies of the connections between these systems and other non-classical logics, such as non-monotonic, many-valued, relevant, paracomplete and fuzzy logics; philosophical interpretations of these constructions; and applications to other sciences, in particular quantum physics and mathematics. Reasoning with contradictions is the challenge of paraconsistent logic. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in mathematical logic, computer science, philosophical logic, linguistics and physics.

Topology, Geometry, and Algebra: Interactions and new directions

Topology, Geometry, and Algebra: Interactions and new directions PDF Author: Alejandro Adem
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 082182063X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
This volume presents the proceedings from the conference on ``Topology, Geometry, and Algebra: Interactions and New Directions'' held in honor of R. James Milgram at Stanford University in August 1999. The meeting brought together distinguished researchers from a variety of areas related to algebraic topology and its applications. Papers in the book present a wide range of subjects, reflecting the nature of the conference. Topics include moduli spaces, configuration spaces, surgerytheory, homotopy theory, knot theory, group actions, and more. Particular emphasis was given to the breadth of interaction between the different areas.

Handbook of Homotopy Theory

Handbook of Homotopy Theory PDF Author: Haynes Miller
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351251619
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 982

Book Description
The Handbook of Homotopy Theory provides a panoramic view of an active area in mathematics that is currently seeing dramatic solutions to long-standing open problems, and is proving itself of increasing importance across many other mathematical disciplines. The origins of the subject date back to work of Henri Poincaré and Heinz Hopf in the early 20th century, but it has seen enormous progress in the 21st century. A highlight of this volume is an introduction to and diverse applications of the newly established foundational theory of ¥ -categories. The coverage is vast, ranging from axiomatic to applied, from foundational to computational, and includes surveys of applications both geometric and algebraic. The contributors are among the most active and creative researchers in the field. The 22 chapters by 31 contributors are designed to address novices, as well as established mathematicians, interested in learning the state of the art in this field, whose methods are of increasing importance in many other areas.

Algebraic Topology and Its Applications

Algebraic Topology and Its Applications PDF Author: Gunnar E. Carlsson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461395267
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
In 1989-90 the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute conducted a program on Algebraic Topology and its Applications. The main areas of concentration were homotopy theory, K-theory, and applications to geometric topology, gauge theory, and moduli spaces. Workshops were conducted in these three areas. This volume consists of invited, expository articles on the topics studied during this program. They describe recent advances and point to possible new directions. They should prove to be useful references for researchers in Algebraic Topology and related fields, as well as to graduate students.

Stable and Unstable Homotopy

Stable and Unstable Homotopy PDF Author: William G. Dwyer

ISBN: 9780821871263
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This volume presents the proceedings of workshops on stable homotopy theory and on unstable homotopy theory held at The Fields Institute as part of the homotopy program during the year 1996. The papers in the volume describe current research in the subject, and all included works were refereed. Rather than being a summary of work to be published elsewhere, each paper is the unique source for the new material it contains. The book contains current research from international experts in the subject area, and presents open problems with directions for future research.
