New Developments in Lie Theory and Geometry

New Developments in Lie Theory and Geometry PDF Author: Carolyn Gordon
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821846515
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This volume is an outgrowth of the Sixth Workshop on Lie Theory and Geometry, held in the province of Cordoba, Argentina in November 2007. The representation theory and structure theory of Lie groups play a pervasive role throughout mathematics and physics. Lie groups are tightly intertwined with geometry and each stimulates developments in the other. The aim of this volume is to bring to a larger audience the mutually beneficial interaction between Lie theorists and geometers that animated the workshop. Two prominent themes of the representation theoretic articles are Gelfand pairs and the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups. Among the more geometric articles are an exposition of major recent developments on noncompact homogeneous Einstein manifolds and aspects of inverse spectral geometry presented in settings accessible to readers new to the area.

Book Description
The Lie Theory Workshop, founded by Joe Wolf (UC, Berkeley), has been running for over two decades. At the beginning, the top universities in California and Utah hosted the meetings, which continue to run on a quarterly basis. Experts in representation theory/Lie theory from various parts of the US, Europe, Asia (China, Japan, Singapore, Russia), Canada, and South and Central America were routinely invited to give talks at these meetings. Nowadays, the workshops are also hosted at universities in Louisiana, Virginia, and Oklahoma. These Lie theory workshops have been sponsored by the NSF, noting the talks have been seminal in describing new perspectives in the field covering broad areas of current research. The contributors have all participated in these Lie theory workshops and include in this volume expository articles which will cover representation theory from the algebraic, geometric, analytic, and topological perspectives with also important connections to math physics. These survey articles, review and update the prominent seminal series of workshops in representation/Lie theory mentioned above, and reflects the widespread influence of those workshops in such areas as harmonic analysis, representation theory, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, number theory, and mathematical physics. Many of the contributors have had prominent roles in both the classical and modern developments of Lie theory and its applications.

New Developments in Lie Theory and Their Applications

New Developments in Lie Theory and Their Applications PDF Author: Juan Tirao
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461229782
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
Representation theory, and more generally Lie theory, has played a very important role in many of the recent developments of mathematics and in the interaction of mathematics with physics. In August-September 1989, a workshop (Third Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications) was held in the environs of C6rdoba, Argentina to present expositions of important recent developments in the field that would be accessible to graduate students and researchers in related fields. This volume contains articles that are edited versions of the lectures (and short courses) given at the workshop. Within representation theory, one of the main open problems is to determine the unitary dual of a real reductive group. Although this prob lem is as yet unsolved, the recent work of Barbasch, Vogan, Arthur as well as others has shed new light on the structure of the problem. The article of D. Vogan presents an exposition of some aspects of this prob lem, emphasizing an extension of the orbit method of Kostant, Kirillov. Several examples are given that explain why the orbit method should be extended and how this extension should be implemented.

Representations of Finite Dimensional Algebras and Related Topics in Lie Theory and Geometry

Representations of Finite Dimensional Algebras and Related Topics in Lie Theory and Geometry PDF Author: Vlastimil Dlab
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821834169
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 502

Book Description
These proceedings are from the Tenth International Conference on Representations of Algebras and Related Topics (ICRA X) held at The Fields Institute. In addition to the traditional ``instructional'' workshop preceding the conference, there were also workshops on ``Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory'', ``Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory'', and ``Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras''. These workshops reflect the latest developments and the increasing interest in areas that are closely related to the representation theory of finite dimensional associative algebras. Although these workshops were organized separately, their topics are strongly interrelated. The workshop on Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory surveyed various recently established connections, such as those pertaining to the classification of vector bundles or Cohen-Macaulay modules over Noetherian rings, coherent sheaves on curves, or ideals in Weyl algebras. In addition, methods from algebraic geometry or commutative algebra relating to quiver representations and varieties of modules were presented. The workshop on Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory surveyed developments in finite dimensional algebras and infinite dimensional Lie theory, especially as the two areas interact and may have future interactions. The workshop on Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras dealt with the different approaches of using the representation theory of quivers (and species) in order to construct quantum groups, working either over finite fields or over the complex numbers. In particular, these proceedings contain a quite detailed outline of the use of perverse sheaves in order to obtain canonical bases. The book is recommended for graduate students and researchers in algebra and geometry.

Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras

Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras PDF Author: Erhard Neher
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 082185237X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Lie theory has connections to many other disciplines such as geometry, number theory, mathematical physics, and algebraic combinatorics. The interaction between algebra, geometry and combinatorics has proven to be extremely powerful in shedding new light on each of these areas. This book presents the lectures given at the Fields Institute Summer School on Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras held at the University of Ottawa in 2009. It provides a systematic account by experts of some of the exciting developments in Lie algebras and representation theory in the last two decades. It includes topics such as geometric realizations of irreducible representations in three different approaches, combinatorics and geometry of canonical and crystal bases, finite $W$-algebras arising as the quantization of the transversal slice to a nilpotent orbit, structure theory of extended affine Lie algebras, and representation theory of affine Lie algebras at level zero. This book will be of interest to mathematicians working in Lie algebras and to graduate students interested in learning the basic ideas of some very active research directions. The extensive references in the book will be helpful to guide non-experts to the original sources.

Book Description
This collection of invited expository articles focuses on recent developments and trends in infinite-dimensional Lie theory, which has become one of the core areas of modern mathematics. The book is divided into three parts: infinite-dimensional Lie (super- )algebras, geometry of infinite-dimensional Lie (transformation) groups, and representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Part (A) is mainly concerned with the structure and representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and contains articles on the structure of direct-limit Lie algebras, extended affine Lie algebras and loop algebras, as well as representations of loop algebras and Kac-Moody superalgebras. The articles in Part (B) examine connections between infinite-dimensional Lie theory and geometry. The topics range from infinite-dimensional groups acting on fiber bundles, corresponding characteristic classes and gerbes, to Jordan-theoretic geometries and new results on direct-limit groups. The analytic representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups is still very much underdeveloped. The articles in Part (C) develop new, promising methods based on heat kernels, multiplicity freeness, Banach-Lie-Poisson spaces, and infinite-dimensional generalizations of reductive Lie groups. Contributors: B. Allison, D. Beltiţă, W. Bertram, J. Faulkner, Ph. Gille, H. Glöckner, K.-H. Neeb, E. Neher, I. Penkov, A. Pianzola, D. Pickrell, T.S. Ratiu, N.R. Scheithauer, C. Schweigert, V.
