A review of microscopic optical model potentials used in the analysis of neutron scattering and analyzing power data below 100 MeV (5 ≤E{sub n}≤100 MeV) is presented. The quality of the fits to the data over a wide massd (6Li-239Pu) and energy range is discussed. It is shown that reasonably good agreement with the data is obtained with only three parameters, [lambda]{sub V}, [lambda]{sub W}, and [lambda]{sub SO}, which show a smooth mass and energy dependence. These parameters are normalizing constants to the real (V), and imaginary (W) central potentials and the real spin-orbit (V{sub SO}) potential. 14 refs., 7 figs.

The purpose of the present work is first to investigate the capabilities of a semi-microscopic optical-model potential involving fewer adjustable parameters than phenomenological models and second, to test the sensitivity of this potential to various rotational band assumptions. Our analysis of the model capabilities is performed using experimental elastic, inelastic, and total cross sections from approx. 10 keV to 15 MeV as well as neutron strength functions, and our sensitivity study is performed for the first three bands of 239Pu: 1/2(0.0), 5/2/sup +/(286 keV), and 7/2−(392 keV).

The polarization and differential cross sections for neutrons scattered from Zr, Nb, Mo, and Cd were measured at five angles for neutron energies between 0.275 and 0.85 Mev. The results were analyzed in terms of a local optical model equivalent to the noniocal model of Perey. The analysis leads to the following major conclusions; the calculations, corrected for the effects of compound elastic scattering, are consistent with most of the observed scattering data, particularly when a spin-orbit potential that includes both a real and imaginary term of the Thomas type is employed; and calculations (based on this model) of the magnitude and shape of the P-wave neutron strength function in the region near A = 100 are not very sensitive to the parameters of the spin-orbit potential -- at least when the real term is between 7 and 2 Mev and the imaginary term is between 0 and 7 Mev. Neutron differential-elastic-scattering cross sections of niobium were measured from 1.5 to 10.0 MeV at intervals of less than or equal to200 keV below 4.0 MeV, and of approx. =500 keV from 4.0 to 10.0 MeV. Ten to more than fifty differential-cross-section values were determined at each incident energy, distributed over the angular range approx. =20 to 160°. The observed values were interpreted in the context of the spherical optical-statistical model. It was found that the volume integral of the real potential decreased with energy whereas the integral of the imaginary part increased. The energy dependence in both cases was consistent with a linear variation. There is a dispersion relationship between the real and imaginary potentials, and when this was used, in conjunction with the experimental imaginary potential, it was possible to predict the observed energy dependence of the real potential to a good degree of accuracy, thus supporting the consistency of the data and its analysis. The real-potential well depths needed to give the correct binding energies of the 2d52, 3s12, 2d32 and 1g--2 particle states and of the 1g92 hole state are in reasonable agreement with those given by a linear extrapolation of the scattering potential. However, the well depths needed to give the observed binding of the 2p32, 1f52 and 2p12 hole states are about 10% less than the extrapolated values. 40 refs., 5 figs.

This book is a M.Sc. thesis in theoretical nuclear physics. It is supervised by the professors of theoretical nuclear physics at faculty of Science, Cairo university: M. Y. M. Hassan, M. Y. H. Farag, and E. H. Esmael. The elastic scattering and breakup of neutron halo nuclei are studied in this work. The halo nuclei exhibit a strong cluster structure and anomalously large matter radii. Their separation energies of the halo neutrons are very low, so they can easily broken. These nuclei are so short lived that these cannot be used as targets. Instead, direct reactions can be done in inverse kinematics. The optical potential is constructed only from the framework of the folding model. It has few fitting parameters and give good agreement with the cross section data. Thus, it is not necessary to introduce a large number of arbitrary fitting parameters as done in the phenomenological potentials. Different densities for the halo nuclei are used and tested. The parameters of the density-dependent term are adjusted to fulfill saturation of nuclear matter. The breakup effect is studied by adding a dynamical polarization potential with different forms to the "bare" optical potential.

Neutron elastic and inelastic differential cross sections for targets between 9Be and 239Pu at energies, E> 14 MeV have been measured using the Livermore and Ohio University neutron time-of-flight facilities. We review here the data and the analyses based on two local microscopic optical potentials: that of Jeukenne, Lejeune and Mahaux, and that of Brieva and Rook. The results are also compared with calculations using global potentials. Coupled channel formalism has been used in the analysis of targets with strong deformations, such as Be, C, Ta, and actinides. The value of the microscopic optical potentials as a tool to predict elastic and inelastic neutron cross sections over a wide mass and energy range is discussed. The need for neutron measurements up to higher energies and their analysis in conjunction with (p, p) and charge exchange (p, n) data is addressed. 17 refs.
