Book Description
This second volume in the HERCULES Course on Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for Condensed Matter Studies is devoted to selected applications in physics and chemistry of solids, with the fourteen chapters ranging from general considerations of symmetry in condensed matter to the most recent developments in magnetic excitations and electron spectroscopies in high Tc superconductors. The subjects were chosen either for their basic importance or because of interesting new developments, while the fifteen authors were selected both for their high scientific expertise and their teaching skills.

Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for Condensed Matter Studies PDF Author: Jose Baruchel
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783540565611
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
This book gives the basic information required for making experiments in neutron or x-ray scattering or spectroscopy. These experiments are usually executed at large facilities far from the scientist's home laboratory. One of the main goals of this book is to teach the scientist the possibilities offered to him in these institutions. In addition the book can be seen as a rather complete introduction into the physics of synchrotron radiation as applied to condensed matter physics and to molecular biology. The articles are based on lectures given in a two-months course, HERCULES, installed in Grenoble to train biologists, chemists and physicists. The book covers the production of radiation including theory. It describes all aspects of instrumentation and outlines the basics for various fields of research done in these large facilities. The short chapters are written by experts in the field and can be read independently. The book may also be used as the basis for a lecture on neutron and x-ray defraction. This volume will befollowed by two more dealing with applications to solid state physics and chemistry as well as to biology and soft-matter physics.

Book Description
The present volume is the third and last in the series based on the HERCULES Course on Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for Condensed Matter Studies. It covers selected applications of neutron and synchrotron radiation to soft condensed matter (introduction plus 7 chapters) and biology (introduction plus 10 chapters). The fields are extremely wide, so only some selected topics representative of recent interest and developments are reported. The authors were selected for their scientific expertise and teaching skills. An index covering the content of all three volumes is included.
