Book Description
The Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor will be installed at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory facility. This is a major step to reach the goal of fusion power using toroidal magnetic fields for plasma confinement. A major part of this test reactor will be four neutral beam injection systems. These systems will inject 20 MW of 120 kV neutral deuterium atoms into the plasma for 0.5 seconds. In order to achieve the required power input to the plasma, several systems are required within the neutral beam line. These are the source, neutralizer, ion deflection magnet, calorimeter and retraction system, ion dump, cryopumps and vacuum enclosure. All of these systems have constraints imposed which increase the complexity of their designs. Since all systems must operate in a tritium environment, remote handling capabilities must be incorporated into the design. An overview is presented of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory/Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Neutral Beam Injection System design. Specifications for the machine and a general description of the total system are presented.

Book Description
Most of the components of the Neutral Beam Lines of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) will be enclosed in a 50 cubic meter box-shaped vacuum chamber. The chamber will have a number of unorthodox features to accomodate both neutral beam and TFTR requirements. The design constraints, and the resulting chamber design, are presented.

Test Facility for the Development of 150-keV, Multi-megawatt Neutral Beam Systems

Test Facility for the Development of 150-keV, Multi-megawatt Neutral Beam Systems PDF Author:

Book Description
The next generation of CTR experiments, such as the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR), will require neutral-beam injection systems that produce multi- megawatt, 120-keV deuterium-beam pulses of 0.5-second duration. Since present injection systems are operating in the 10- to 40-keV range, an intensive development effort is in progress to meet a 150-keV requirement. The vacuum system and power supplies that make up a test facility to be used in the development of these injectors are described. (MOW).

Book Description
At the Lawrence Livermore and Berkeley Laboratories two major neutral beam system designs were developed, the High Voltage Test Stand (HVTS) and a conceptual system for the Two Component Tokamak-Toroidal Fusion Test Reactor (TCT- TFTR). The HVTS was designed for flexibility in performing a wide variety of tests, while the TCT-TFTR beam line was designed to satisfy particular requirements for target-plasma operation. Both designs make use of condensation cryopumping to handle very high gas loads. The HVTS design involves high-voltage isolation techniques of cryogenic and other systems. The TCT-TFTR design requires optimization of pumping and other systems. It is to be expected that experience gained from design and operation of the HVTS systems will be of value to the final design of TCT-TFTR and to the engineering of future fusion reactors. (auth).

Book Description
The 150 keV neutral beam test facility provides for the testing and development of neutral beam injectors and beam systems of the class that will be needed for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) and The Next Step (TNS). The test facility can simulate a complete beam line injection system and can provide a wide range of experimental operating conditions. Herein is offered a general description of the facility's capabilities and a discussion of present system performance.

Fault Protection for Neutral-beam Injection Systems

Book Description
This paper discusses the accelerating, or main supply for the Neutral Injection System on PLT and, in particular, provides evaluation of a system for protection against the possibility of an arc developing in the accel portion of the ion source gun. The design of a protection scheme utilizing a fast turn-on and turn-off ignitron crowbar is described and evaluated. This crowbar is used to provide backup protection for the ion source high power vacuum tube used as a voltage regulator and series switch. Ignitron crowbars are proposed for use as primary protection of the 150 KV ion source being developed for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) if a 150 KV switch tube is not readily available and inexpensive.
