Book Description
The zebrafish, Danio (Brachydanio) rerio, is considered one of the major model systems for the study of nervous system development and function at molecular, cellular and systems level. This is due in large part to the extensive and ongoing maturation of sophisticated genetic manipulation and mutant generation techniques. Although considerable knowledge concerning the embryonic development of the central nervous system in this animal has been gained in recent years, there is a lack of information concerning the structural organization of the adult brain. This work therefore aims at providing a neuroanatomical overview of the zebrafish brain, and identifies the major subdivisions, nuclei and tracts within the adult brain, based mainly on a comparison with the well-known brain of the closely related goldfish, Carassius auratus.

Atlas of Early Zebrafish Brain Development PDF Author: Dr. Thomas Mueller
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0124172865

Book Description
Atlas of Early Zebrafish Brain Development: A Tool for Molecular Neurogenetics, Second Edition, remains the only neuroanatomical expression atlas of important genetic and immunohistochemical markers of this vertebrate model system. It represents a key reference and interpretation matrix for analyzing expression domains of genes involved in Zebrafish brain development and neurogenesis, and serves as a continuing milestone in this research area. This updated volume provides in-situ hybridized and immunostained preparations of complete series of brain sections, revealing markers of the fundamental stages in the life history of neuronal cells in very high quality preparations and photographic plates. Specific additions to this edition include documentation on the distribution of neurons expressing GABA, dopamine and serotonin, material on the basal ganglia, hypothalamus, and the caudal, segmented part of the diencephalon, new theories on the early organization of the telencephalon and thalamus, and integration of a comparative perspective on the mid- and hindbrain. Book Description
Understanding how the brain functions is one of the most ambitious current scientific goals. This challenge will only be accomplish by a multidisciplinary approach involving genetics, molecular biology, optics, ethology, neurobiology and mathematics and using tractable model systems. The zebrafish larva is a transparent genetically tractable small vertebrate, ideal for the combination state-of-the- art imaging techniques (e.g. two-photon scanning microscopy, single-plane illumination microscopy, spatial light modulator microscopy and lightfield microscopy), bioluminiscence and optogenetics to monitor and manipulate neuronal activity from single specific neurons up to the entire brain, in an intact behaving organism. Furthermore, the zebrafish model offers large and increasing collection of mutant and transgenic lines modelling human brain diseases. With these advantages in hand, the zebrafish larva became in the recent years, a novel animal model to study neuronal circuits and behaviour, taking us closer than ever before to understand how the brain controls behaviour.

Behavioral and Neural Genetics of Zebrafish

Behavioral and Neural Genetics of Zebrafish PDF Author: Robert T. Gerlai
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 9780128175286
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 800

Book Description
The past decade has seen a rapid accumulation of knowledge on the behavioral characteristics of zebrafish, and increased investigation into the neurobiological basis of behavior using zebrafish. This simple vertebrate represents an ideal compromise between system complexity and practical simplicity, with its mammalian sequence homology, fecundity, and conveniently small size and transparent embryology. Behavioral and Neural Genetics of Zebrafish assembles state of the art methodologies and the most current concepts pertinent to the neurobehavioral genetics of zebrafish. Discussing its natural behavior, motor function, and learning and memory, it focuses on the fry and adult zebrafish and features a comprehensive account of modern genetic and neural methods adapted to or specifically developed for Danio rerio. Numerous examples of how these behavioral methods may be utilized for disease models using the zebrafish will be presented, as well as a section on bioinformatics and "big-data" related questions. Focusing on this excellent translational tool, this book examines a species with which investigators may model and analyze even such complex human diseases as those associated with brain dysfunction. Provides the most comprehensive snapshot of the fast-evolving zebrafish neurobehavior genetics field Describes description of behavioral, genetic, and neural methods and concepts and adult and larval zebrafish Features examples of zebrafish models of human central nervous system disorders Discusses bioinformatics questions pertinent to zebrafish neurobehavioral genetics
