In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.

In the study of high speed flows at high altitudes, such as that encountered by re-entry spacecrafts, the interaction of chemical reactions and other non-equilibrium processes in the flow field with the gas dynamics is crucial. Generally speaking, problems of this level of complexity must resort to numerical methods for solutions, using sophisticated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. The difficulties introduced by reacting gas dynamics can be classified into three distinct headings: (1) the usually inadequate knowledge of the reaction rate coefficients in the non-equilibrium reaction system; (2) the vastly larger number of unknowns involved in the computation and the expected stiffness of the equations; and (3) the interpretation of the detailed reacting CFD numerical results. The research performed accepts the premise that reacting flows of practical interest in the future will in general be too complex or 'untractable' for traditional analytical developments. The power of modern computers must be exploited. However, instead of focusing solely on the construction of numerical solutions of full-model equations, attention is also directed to the 'derivation' of the simplified model from the given full-model. In other words, the present research aims to utilize computations to do tasks which have traditionally been done by skilled theoreticians: to reduce an originally complex full-model system into an approximate but otherwise equivalent simplified model system. The tacit assumption is that once the appropriate simplified model is derived, the interpretation of the detailed numerical reacting CFD numerical results will become much easier. In the present investigation, the authors have extended their earlier work on the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations to include the effects of diffusion and finite rates of chemical reactions for a nonequilibrium gas mixture. The governing system of nonlinear partial differential equations utilized includes the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and diffusing species, with temperature dependent transport properties and chemical reaction rates. These equations have been utilized in cylindrical coordinates to calculate the time dependent flow field which is formed when a planar shock wave is accelerated toward the cylinder by a planar piston. For the free stream Reynolds number (31.5) and Mach number (2.2) selected for the sample computations, results are presented for the variation of the radial and tangential components of velocity, the density, the temperature and the mass fraction of nitrogen atoms as a function of position and time. The motion of the sonic surface enveloping the cylinder is also shown. (Author).

Aircraft design processes require extensive work in the area of both aerodynamics and structure, fonning an environment for aeroelasticity investigations. Present and future designs of European aircraft are characterized by an ever increasing aircraft size and perfonnance. Strong weight saving requirements are met by introduction of new materials, leading to more flexible structure of the aircraft. Consequently, aeroelastic phenomena such as vortex-induced aeroelastic oscillations and moving shock waves can be predominant and may have a significant effect on the aircraft perfonnance. Hence, the ability to estimate reliable margins for aeroelastic instabilities (flutter) or dynamic loads (buffeting) is a major concern to the aircraft designer. As modern aircrafts have wing bending modes with frequencies that are low enough to influence the flight control system, demands on unsteady aerodynamics and structural analysis to predict flight control effectiveness and riding comfort for passengers are extremely high. Therefore, the aircraft industries need an improved capacity of robust, accurate and reliable prediction methods in the coupled aeroelastic, flight mechanics and loads disciplines. In particular, it is necessary to develop/improve and calibrate the numerical tools in order to predict with high level of accuracy and capability complex and non-classical aeroelastic phenomena, including aerodynamic non-linearities, such as shock waves and separation, as well as structural non-linearities, e. g. control surface free-play.
