An Introduction to Uncertainty in Measurement

An Introduction to Uncertainty in Measurement PDF Author: L. Kirkup
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139454900
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
Measurement shapes scientific theories, characterises improvements in manufacturing processes and promotes efficient commerce. In concert with measurement is uncertainty, and students in science and engineering need to identify and quantify uncertainties in the measurements they make. This book introduces measurement and uncertainty to second and third year students of science and engineering. Its approach relies on the internationally recognised and recommended guidelines for calculating and expressing uncertainty (known by the acronym GUM). The statistics underpinning the methods are considered and worked examples and exercises are spread throughout the text. Detailed case studies based on typical undergraduate experiments are included to reinforce the principles described in the book. This guide is also useful to professionals in industry who are expected to know the contemporary methods in this increasingly important area. Heat Transfer

Heat Transfer PDF Author: Aziz Belmiloudi
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 9533072261
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 670

Book Description
Over the past few decades there has been a prolific increase in research and development in area of heat transfer, heat exchangers and their associated technologies. This book is a collection of current research in the above mentioned areas and discusses experimental, theoretical and calculation approaches and industrial utilizations with modern ideas and methods to study heat transfer for single and multiphase systems. The topics considered include various basic concepts of heat transfer, the fundamental modes of heat transfer (namely conduction, convection and radiation), thermophysical properties, condensation, boiling, freezing, innovative experiments, measurement analysis, theoretical models and simulations, with many real-world problems and important modern applications. The book is divided in four sections : "Heat Transfer in Micro Systems", "Boiling, Freezing and Condensation Heat Transfer", "Heat Transfer and its Assessment", "Heat Transfer Calculations", and each section discusses a wide variety of techniques, methods and applications in accordance with the subjects. The combination of theoretical and experimental investigations with many important practical applications of current interest will make this book of interest to researchers, scientists, engineers and graduate students, who make use of experimental and theoretical investigations, assessment and enhancement techniques in this multidisciplinary field as well as to researchers in mathematical modelling, computer simulations and information sciences, who make use of experimental and theoretical investigations as a means of critical assessment of models and results derived from advanced numerical simulations and improvement of the developed models and numerical methods.

Steam and Gas Tables with Computer Equations

Steam and Gas Tables with Computer Equations PDF Author: Thomas F. Jr. Irving
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323160336
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
Steam and Gas Tables with Computer Equations presents tables illustrating the thermodynamic properties of steam and air, along with computer equations. Additional equations for a number of other gaseous substances which are useful in engineering investigations are included. This book is comprised of two chapters and begins with a discussion on the thermodynamic properties of steam, which can be divided into saturation and superheat properties. The various thermodynamic properties, including saturation temperature and pressure and liquid and vapor saturation entropy, are represented with three basic types of equations from the triple point to the critical point. The accuracy of the properties calculated from the base data is also considered. The next chapter deals with the thermodynamic properties of air and other gases (ethane, hydrogen, methane, nitrogen, oxygen propane, n-butane), including those properties which are useful in engineering design and analysis (specific heat at constant pressure and volume, enthalpy and entropy function, isentropic pressure function, etc). This monograph will serve as a useful guide for chemists, mathematicians, and computer programmers and scientists.

Mechanical Engineering for Sustainable Development

Mechanical Engineering for Sustainable Development PDF Author: C. S. P. Rao
Publisher: Apple Academic Press
ISBN: 9781774631652
Category : Mechanical engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 640

Book Description
This volume provides valuable insight into diverse topics related to mechanical engineering and presents state-of-the-art work on sustainable development being carried out throughout the world by budding researchers and scientists. Divided into three sections, the volume covers machine design, materials and manufacturing, and thermal engineering. It presents innovative research work on machine design that is of relevance to such varied fields as the automotive industry, agriculture, and human anatomy. The second section addresses materials characterization, an important tool in assessing proper materials for application-oriented jobs, and emerging unconventional machining processes that are important in design engineering for new products and tools. The section on thermal engineering broadly covers the use of viable alternate fuels, such as HHO, biodiesel, etc., with the objective of reducing the burden on petroleum reserves and the environment.

Engineering Thermofluids

Engineering Thermofluids PDF Author: Mahmoud Massoud
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540272801
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1132

Book Description
Thermofluids, while a relatively modern term, is applied to the well-established field of thermal sciences, which is comprised of various intertwined disciplines. Thus mass, momentum, and heat transfer constitute the fundamentals of th- mofluids. This book discusses thermofluids in the context of thermodynamics, single- and two-phase flow, as well as heat transfer associated with single- and two-phase flows. Traditionally, the field of thermal sciences is taught in univer- ties by requiring students to study engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, in that order. In graduate school, these topics are discussed at more advanced levels. In recent years, however, there have been attempts to in- grate these topics through a unified approach. This approach makes sense as thermal design of widely varied systems ranging from hair dryers to semicond- tor chips to jet engines to nuclear power plants is based on the conservation eq- tions of mass, momentum, angular momentum, energy, and the second law of thermodynamics. While integrating these topics has recently gained popularity, it is hardly a new approach. For example, Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot in Transport Phenomena, Rohsenow and Choi in Heat, Mass, and Momentum Transfer, El- Wakil, in Nuclear Heat Transport, and Todreas and Kazimi in Nuclear Systems have pursued a similar approach. These books, however, have been designed for advanced graduate level courses. More recently, undergraduate books using an - tegral approach are appearing.
