The West

The West PDF Author: Conway, John F.
Publisher: James Lorimer & Company
ISBN: 9781550289053
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
In time for Alberta's and Saskatchewan's 100th anniversary of Confederation, political commentator and writer John Conway examines the unique way the West has shaped the rest of Canada. The Riel Rebellions, the Winnipeg General Strike, the founding of the CCF, Social Credit and Reform parties, the struggle for provincial control of resources -- much of the impetus for political, social and economic change in Canada has come from the West. From pre-Confederation to the present, author John Conway, himself a Westerner, tells the story of the colourful and controversial figures who molded the region. His lively history of the West and its peoples offers insight into the experience of Western Canadians and documents their contribution to Canadian economic and political life. The third edition of this popular and successful history describes Stephen Harper's arrival on the political scene, as well as the rise and fall of such figures as Grant Devine, Bill Vander Zalm, Glen Clark, Roy Romanow, and Stockwell Day. It also describes how the West, the cradle of Canadian social democracy, was transformed into the bastion of the right during the last decade.

The Alliance Without Enemy: a Post Cold War History of West

The Alliance Without Enemy: a Post Cold War History of West PDF Author: Dr. Priyabhishek Sharma
Publisher: Partridge Publishing
ISBN: 154370560X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
This book has the following features: • When we say “West,” what do we really mean? The prologue sets out to explore this question from literary, historical, strategic, philosophical, and cultural vantage points • In order to understand today’s West, different shades of the long and arduous transatlantic dialogue starting with Christopher Columbus’s accidental discovery of America to the collapse of Soviet Union have been reasonably accounted for. The second chapter traces back this evolutionary journey in simple, easily understandable way. • The book has been a fifteen-year story of phenomenal change, which redefined the very nature of the Western Alliance after the collapse of Soviet Union. • Changes in the geopolitical map of Europe, emergence of European Union, re-orientation of NATO, and the mutual play between the United States and Europe all throughout the decade of 1990s have been woven into the narrative of this book with the aim to understand how the West, if at all, has changed. • Three major events of post–Cold War history—the Balkan Crisis, the 9/11, and Iraq War 2003—had played major stimulus in re-understanding the West. Detailed chronological accounts of these events have been presented before the reader. • What are the rationale, motivations, and implications of EU and NATO’s enlargements to the East, and how has the enlargement impacted the Alliance. • The epilogue reflects upon what has changed and what continues in today’s West across different historical phases. • How have the schemes of European security in post-cold war era been coexisting with the changing face of NATO is yet another theme this book seeks to address.

Industry and HMOs: A Natural Alliance

Industry and HMOs: A Natural Alliance PDF Author: Richard H. Egdahl
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461299527
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 125

Book Description
This fifth issue in the Industry and Health Care series takes a quick turn through unpredictable and only partially charted waters. The series as a whole has set out to explore the role of industry as a potential agent of change in the health care system, and to map the courses that may lead toward control of costs. One that looks possible is the effort now being made to infuse some competition into the health care industry through organized systems of care, known as HMOs. Health maintenance organizations, especially the fee-for-service variety known as IPAs (individual practice associations), have been a particular inter est of the Center for Industry and Health Care, where a national data base 'on IP A performance is being established with the aid of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Center's identity with HMOs, combined with its focus on industry and health care, has afforded us unusual access to nascent corporate thinking on the pros and cons of HMO sponsorship. We are grateful for these opportunities, and for the insights industry people have shared with us. This series draws heavily on that experience.

Yellowstone to Yukon

Yellowstone to Yukon PDF Author: Florian Schulz
Publisher: Braided River
ISBN: 9781594851049
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
"It's not only a feast for the eye--Florian Schulz is a fine young nature-wildlife photographer--but a challenge to those of us who live in a not-yet-used corner of he planet." (Seattle P-I)A grizzly bear emerges, one small detail in an immense vista of field and mountains and sky. A shoreline, still and empty but for the telltale tracks of passing wildlife. Golden peaks that roll to the horizon, starkly beautiful in the morning light. This kind of space, of solitude-of simple wildness-still exists in North America, outside the boundaries of any park.Photographer Florian Schulz documents the landscape, plants, animals, and people of an eco-system that is surprisingly intact up and down the spine of the Rocky Mountains. There is still time to make a difference: to direct the path of encroaching development and establish connections between the national and provincial parks on this course.Essay contributors--including Dvid Suzuki, David Quammen, Rick Bass, Ted Kerasote and Roberts F. Kennedy Jr.-- tell of their travels through the region and their experience of the land. They explain the need for Y2Y, based on new findings that reveal isolated nature sanctuaries to be a recipe for extinction. They set the Y2Y conservation program in context: a grand vision grounded on science; a practical plan that provides for economic as well as environmental sustainability; a blueprint designating critical wildlife habitat. Environmental conservation does not mean that humansmust be excluded from the land, but we must act thoughtfully. For more information about the author, visit his web site at www.visionsofthewild.com/.
